Hi Katie (and all),
I am in the same boat with a couple of my students and agree with Katie!
I, too, have encouraged time off but they are adamant about staying even though they are not making progress.

Any other insight is appreciated!

Sincerely,
Dari Trujillo

Hi all,
We did not get to discuss my question at today’s meeting so I’m bringing to all of you via an email because I know some of you have voiced this concern in the past so have some experience….. Please see the note below—I’ve taken the student’s name out for privacy. If anyone has some advice or thoughts on this, please share if you have some time! Thanks!

Best,
Katie

Subject: RE: Fall 2019 Academic Eligibility Report - NTRS

Hi Nancy,
I’m really concerned that XXXXXX is being allowed to continue. He really should be disqualified/made ineligible. He has been enrolled for 4 out of the last 5 semesters (one semester he had a complete withdrawal for medical reasons) but has never earned more than a 1.9 in any given semester, so his GPA has NEVER been a 2.0 or above. I strongly encouraged him to take time off at the UA, go to Pima and get his gen eds done there, but he chose not to, despite the fact that he has financial hardships (a matter of pride I think). I just think its is unfair to allow him to add to his debt by letting him continue here at the UA. I do not want to sign off on a SAP appeal because I think its unethical, and I don’t want him to get charged for classes he really should be encouraged to drop. Do you have any advice?

Best,
Katie

RE: Fall 2019 Academic Eligibility Report (formerly known as Academic Probation Report)

As you may recall the University of Arizona implemented new changes to the Undergraduate Academic Eligibility Policy<https://catalog.arizona.edu/policy/undergraduate-academic-eligibility-policy> effective Fall 2019. The policy replaced the Academic Standing, Progress, Probation & Disqualification Policy. Academic eligibility is the ability to enroll in courses at the University of Arizona; it is automatically calculated at the end of each fall and spring semester. The policy is designed to help undergraduates stay on track for degree completion at the University of Arizona.

The college report included 271 total students with an eligibility status of Academic Warning or Academic Probation. Last Fall (2018) CALS had 270 students with comparable statuses. Attached is the Fall 2019 Academic Eligibility Report with students in your department or school. Please note that there were no students with Ineligible (former disqualification) status after Fall 2019 across the university. There are tabs in each report with the Academic Eligibility Status.

The report was composed by the UA Registrars unit with the following student information:

  *   Student name
  * Term and cumulative grade point averages
  *   Plan (major)
  *   Email address
  * Academic Eligibility Status (Eligible/Received Back to Good Standing; Academic Review; Academic Warning; Academic Probation)
  * Campus (Distance highlighted in orange; Online in blue; Main not highlighted)

There are five (5) academic statuses related to a student’s eligibility to enroll in courses - copied and pasted from catalog, followed by CALS intervention:
1. Eligible
All new undergraduate students begin with a status of Eligible (i.e., good academic standing);
Students must earn and maintain a 2.00 or higher cumulative GPA to continue in Eligible status;
Students with a status of Eligible may enroll in courses.

2. Academic Review
Review status occurs when a student earns a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or above (i.e., good academic standing), but has a semester GPA of less than a 2.00.
Students with a status of Academic Review will be contacted by their college or school to determine if they need assistance to improve their GPA.

  * CALS: students with this status will be referred to meet with their major advisors. This is an opportunity to find out what contributed to their academic performance during the term, and prevent the same from occurring. We will aim to prevent they end up with an academic warning status. The CAS advisors are available to assist.

3. Academic Warning
Warning status occurs when an undergraduate who was previously Eligible does not earn a 2.00 or higher cumulative GPA;
Students with a status of Academic Warning may enroll in courses; however, they will be contacted by their college or school and required to complete an intervention;
Students who begin a semester/term with a status of Academic Warning and earn a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or above at the end of the semester/term will return to Eligible status.

  * CALS: students with this status will be required to meet with their assigned CAS college advisor (will be assigned by last name), major advisor and with a CALS PALS peer mentor. Attached is a timeline with the protocol, goals and timeframe. With this new implementation of the policy and strive to increase retention with individualized student support to all students, the CALS 195A class will not be taught this Spring term. We intend to offer it again starting Fall 2020.

4. Academic Probation
Probation status occurs when a student who begins a semester/term on Academic Warning does not earn a 2.00 or higher cumulative GPA at the end of the semester/term;
Students with a status of Academic Probation may enroll in courses; however, they will be required to participate in an intervention developed in partnership with each college or school and the University’s Student Success & Retention Innovation program;
Students who begin a semester/term with a status of Academic Probation and earn a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or above at the end of the semester/term will return to Eligible status.

  * CALS: students with this status will be required to complete an intervention assigned by the university. On behalf of CALS we will still require they visit with a CAS and major advisor to assure they understand their status.

5. Ineligible
Ineligible status occurs when an undergraduate student who begins a semester/term on Academic Probation does not earn a 2.00 or higher cumulative GPA at the end of the semester/term;
Students with a status of Ineligible may not enroll in courses; however, they may submit an appeal (usually for extenuating circumstances) requesting an additional semester/term of Academic Probation status
If an appeal is granted, a student may enroll in courses but must complete requirements stipulated in the appeal decision, such as taking fewer units, using specific campus resources, and/or creating an academic action plan.

  * CALS: no student across the university had this status after Fall 2019

Below is an overall breakdown of all UA colleges for your reference:

All students were notified of their academic standing on January 3, 2020 by the Registrar’s Office. On January 8th, students on Academic Warning and Academic Probation status were sent an email by the Thrive Center on my behalf to complete an intervention assessment required of all students across the university. Danielle Flink, CALS Student Success and Retention Specialist, will assist with the coordination of the assessment results.

On behalf of the college, CAS will send students an email on their status and next steps by January 13, 2020.

Please let me know if you have any questions at nancyr at email.arizona.edu<mailto:nancyr at email.arizona.edu> or 621-3611. The CAS advising team is also available to assist at advising at cals.arizona.edu<mailto:advising at cals.arizona.edu> Your time and effort in working with the students is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Wishing you all a wonderful and prosperous new year!

Best,
Nancy
