Dear Advisors,

Happy almost winter break! I hope that you will be able to take some time to rest and restore during the upcoming winter closure,

Attached you will find two different documents:

1) CALS Career Prep Plan - this document breaks things down into different aspects of a student’s academic career and offers suggestions about ways to be successful and engaged in the experience.

2) CALS Competencies Plan - this document defines the CALS Competencies and current list of top employer skills. It then offers suggestions for students on activities they can complete in the beginning of, middle of, and end of their academic career to build these competencies. The PDF also includes a blank version that students can utilize to fill in their own experiences to help them plan for or create the narrative around the skills they are developing.

Please feel free to share these broadly with your students and faculty in your departments. We will be sending a communication to department heads asking them to share broadly with faculty as well. These are meant to be guidelines for students to adopt and make their own. I hope you and your students find them useful. We will also work to get these up on the Career Center website as well as our Handshake library so students can find them as well.

The CALS Career Center is working to ensure that our services are available and accessible to all students. Given that we are a small team, we need your assistance to do that. We will continue to hold workshops and would like to partner with you and the faculty in your departments to meet students where they are. If you or the faculty you work with have classes that could use a presentation on anything career-related, please reach out. If you have student groups looking for this support, please reach out. If you are holding sessions with students and we could be of assistance, please reach out. Don’t feel confined by “typical” topics like resumes, interviewing, etc. While these are important we are happy to create content that meets specific needs of your students. Collaborating with you will be the most successful way for us to ensure we are connecting with as many students as possible and offering them the support they need to be successful.

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the plans. Have a really wonderful break and see you in 2021!

Regards,
Bridget
