As we prepare for the Fall semester we will continue to provide regular updates regarding retention figures through the final official reporting date in September.
You make a difference for students.
Our undergraduate 1st to 2nd year FTFT Cohort retention rate, as of Aug 3rd *84.97%
Our 2019-2020 goal: 84%
Where we were last year at this time: 82.74%
*The Full-Time First-Time (FTFT) retention rate reflects current student actions. As students navigate the evolving health crisis, economic uncertainty, and related challenges more volatility than normal is expected. Furthermore, deep budget cuts resulting in a reduction in critical student success workforce and supports is likely to negatively impact this rate over time.
All of our normal metrics regarding course enrollment and persistence are highly dynamic at this time, both those that are higher or lower than normal.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
* Be understanding as students and their supporters ask questions about returning to campus. They are weighing many factors as they determine their plans.
* Determine how you will continue to promote belonging and welcome if not able to be physically present in your office. Please let SSRI<mailto:studentsuccess at email.arizona.edu> know if you have ideas for materials or messaging.
WHAT IMPACTS RETENTION
* Retention is influenced by academic, sociocultural, physical/mental wellness and financial factors. The current landscape is so fluid, volatile, and difficult these factors are weighing more heavily on students and their support systems.
* As you speak with students about their decisions, consider all of these factors, when and how to have conversations, and what resources exist to help students. Utilize SOS, sos.arizona.edu<https://arizona.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d32f86ca5874a6446ee7768f2&id=831e8f2e6c&e=514bbc2b01> if you need assistance directing students to resources.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS THIS EMAIL?
* A communication sent regularly to many campus partners as we gear up for the fall semester. It shares progress towards our 2019 FTFT undergraduate first to second year retention goal of 84%. The FTFT retention goal is a metric used by the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) and other national entities to evaluate institutional performance, but is only one tool in evaluating student success.
WHY ARE WE SENDING THIS NOW?
* YOU CAN HELP - It doesn't matter if you are a researcher, a maintenance worker, a doctor, an instructor, a cashier, or any other role - you can make a difference by caring for and checking in with students. It is the responsibility of every single one of us to help students succeed.
