Non-Regionally Accredited Course Work

Effective Spring 2019

The University of Arizona will review course work from non-regionally accredited institutions if the institution is Nationally Accredited as recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Non-regionally accredited course work will be reviewed for transfer credit based on an official transcript from the offering institution, as well as submission of a syllabus for each individual course for department or college evaluation.

Transferability of course work will be determined by the appropriate department or college and final credit awarded may be restricted both in number of units and in degree applicability.

To submit non-regionally accredited courses for evaluation, students must complete the following steps:

  1. Read the catalog policy on Non-Regionally Accredited Course Work<https://catalog.arizona.edu/policy/non-regionally-accredited-course-work-transfer-policy>
  2. Read the below Guidelines for Submissions
  3. Meet with an Academic Advisor and complete the FORM<https://transfercredit.arizona.edu/sites/default/files/Credit%20for%20Nationally%20Accredited.pdf> to determine if credit (two courses, not to exceed 10 units maximum), can be used in your degree plan
  4. Meet with Program Coordinator<https://transfercredit.arizona.edu/person/amanda-maxwell> in Transfer Credit & Articulation

Guidelines for Submissions

  * A syllabus must be submitted for each course
     * Each syllabus must include the following:
        *   Learning objectives
        * Assessment/evaluation methods (exams, quizzes, etc.)
        * Schedule of topics covered and number of hours dedicated to each topic
        * A complete list of textbooks, supplemental materials, associated readings, etc.
  * An official transcript must be submitted

Credit for Prior Learning
*Effective Spring 2019
Prior Learning is a term educators use to describe learning and experience that an individual acquires outside of a traditional academic environment. This nontraditional learning is typically not indicated on a college or university transcript and can be acquired through: work experience, workshop or conference participation, in-service training, or involvement in professional organizations. Credit may be awarded for verifiable learning gained through experience-not for the experience itself. Students may also opt to pursue credit by examination<http://catalog.arizona.edu/policy/proficiencycompetency-and-exemption-examinations-special-examination-credit-or-grade> options.
To submit Credit for Prior Learning materials for evaluation, students must complete the following steps:

  1. Read the catalog policy on Credit for Prior Learning<https://catalog.arizona.edu/policy/credit-prior-learning-prior-learning-assessment-policy>
  2. Read the below Guidelines for Submissions
  3. Meet with an Academic Advisor to complete the FORM<https://transfercredit.arizona.edu/sites/default/files/Credit%20for%20Prior%20Learning%20Request%20Form.pdf> to determine if credit (lower division, general elective credit, up to 6 units maximum), can be used in your degree
  4. Meet with Program Coordinator<https://transfercredit.arizona.edu/person/amanda-maxwell> in Transfer Credit & Articulation
Guidelines for Submissions
Materials for Credit for Prior Learning must include the following:

  * Content (syllabus, training/certification materials, etc.)
  *   Learning objectives
  * Assessment/evaluation methods (exams, quizzes, etc.)
  * Schedule of topics covered and number of hours dedicated to each topic
  * Breakdown of hours for content (lecture/lab/studio/internship, etc.)

Subject: [UPAC] Academic Policy Announcement #4
Importance: High

Hello Advisors,

This announcement may be of more interest to you and your students than the previous ones. The Faculty Senate, on 11/5/18, approved two amendments to the Acceptability of Undergraduate Transfer Credit (attached). Like the other announcements, this will be distributed on the faculty listserv and on UAnnounce, but I'd appreciate it if you would also share it with members of your department or college curriculum committee, as those faculty members may be asked to evaluate new kinds of credit. Thank you!

I'm also asking Roxie and Nicole to post this on the ARC Policy & Procedure site<http://advising.arizona.edu/content/policies-procedures/policy-procedure-updates> for future reference.

Celeste
