Good morning UA community,
The 2nd Annual Inclusive Excellence Symposium will take place on Friday, March 30th from 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the University of Arizona Student Union Memorial Center. The theme for this year is “Inviting Communities to Dance: Sustaining a Culture of Responsibility, Accountability, and Collaboration.” This is our in-house diversity conference with 18 workshops happening throughout the day. This symposium is free and open to UA students, faculty and staff. There is also a free luncheon provided to attendees.
At this year’s symposium, we are collaborating with the Campus Food Pantry to combat food insecurity on our campus. It is important to be aware that 3 in 10 UA undergraduates are food insecure. Therefore, in lieu of a conference registration fee we are asking each attendee, if possible, to please donate one non-perishable food item when checking in at the symposium. Items include canned/dried beans, hearty soups, canned fish and chicken in water, dried rice and other grains, whole grain pasta, pasta sauce, breakfast items (cereal, oatmeal, granola bars, dried fruit). These will be collected at the door. Addressing food insecurity is one of the issues that the Marginalized Students of UA focused on and is one of the recommendations from the Diversity Task Force.
Also exciting news, we have two keynote speakers this year!
The opening keynote speaker is Dr. Amanda Kraus. Dr. Kraus is the Director of the Disability Resource Center and Interim Executive Director for Housing & Residential Life at the University of Arizona. She is also an Assistant Professor of Practice in Center for the Study of Higher Education. Dr. Kraus serves on the board of the directors for the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) and has had the privilege of delivering keynotes at campuses such as Singapore Management University, Duke University, and Wake Forest University. Outside of work, she is an avid wheelchair tennis player and was recently recognized as one of Tucson’s Top 40 Under 40.
The luncheon keynote speaker is Dr. Damon A. Williams. Dr. Williams is a visionary and inspirational leader, and one of the Nation’s recognized expert in strategic diversity leadership, youth development, corporate responsibility, and organizational change. He is currently chief catalyst for the Center for Strategic Diversity Leadership and Social Innovation.
Registration will open next week on Monday Feb 19th at 8:00AM and will close on Friday, March 2nd at 5:00 PM. Space is limited to the first 300 people to register. We will close registration when we have reached capacity.
