Hi Everyone,

Happy last day of classes!!!

Below is a letter you likely received last Friday from Associate Dean Mike Staten. I thought you might have a few more questions about these internships as they become reality.

* These will all be paid internships, and should be eligible for credit. In which case you or your department internship coordinator will handle them like any other internship for credit.

o As internships become available they will be posted to the Agvisors listserv as well as the CALS Internship Library https://cals.arizona.edu/students/current-internships

o If a student is hired for an internship, but it does not meet the requirements for major credit. Please refer students to Nancy Rodriguez Lorta to obtain elective internship credit through CALS.

* Students will have to complete all of the standard UA Internship paperwork (which I know is not the most fun to deal with) and as always the student is responsible for keeping track of the process.

If you have further questions as always please feel free to reach out to Chanda or I.

Best,

Kyle

Dear CALS Faculty and Agvisors:

Tuesday, November 27th marked a significant occasion in CALS' continued efforts to engage with the greater Tucson community and provide unique experiential learning opportunities for our students. As many of you may have seen or heard through the media, CALS and the Rillito Park Foundation(RPF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a partnership that will create more than 30 paid internships for CALS students; the internships will encompass all functions of the RPF including the farmers market, special events, and horse racing operations. This program will increase the number of local opportunities for students and make it possible for students to develop hands-on skills during the semester.

Internships will not be limited to working with the Horse Racing operation but will also include opportunities with the farmers market, sustainability, management, retailing, hospitality, food & beverage service, veterinary care, animal training, grooming, broadcasting, handicapping, video production, simulcasting, public and community relations, event management, entertainment, marketing, advertising, social media, publishing, sponsorship, sales, operations, security, parking, admissions and more.

In this case it was important to formalize the partnership to maximize the number of opportunities available for our students. The other advantage of this arrangement is it will not require financial contributions from CALS. We will provide assistance with promoting internships, space in the CALS Career Center for interviews to take place, and expertise on how to structure internships that are mutually beneficial.

The signing ceremony itself was a chance for many to come together and show support for the new agreement. Attendees included members of the Rillito Park Foundation Board, Pima County Supervisors, CALS Leadership, CALS Students, and members of the Tucson community. If you see an opportunity to develop new partnerships for innovative hand-on learning, the CALS Career Center staff are available to assist in the process.

To see current internships received by the CALS Career Center please visit the CALS Internship Library (https://cals.arizona.edu/students/current-internships).

Many thanks to Dean Burgess, Interim Career Center Director Lee Dueringer, and the entire Career Center staff for putting together Tuesday's event and organizing the internships as we move forward next semester. Don't hesitate to contact them for additional information about this exciting opportunity for our students.
Best regards,
Mike
