Subject: Undergrad Opportunity With UA Sky School
Seeking Undergraduate Field Study Mentors
UA Science: Sky School's Research Apprenticeship Program for the 2017-18 school year
Connecting UA undergraduate students with graduate student mentors and middle and high school mentees
UA Science: Sky School (https://skyschool.arizona.edu/) is seeking individuals excited to engage with youth in science. We are recruiting undergraduate Field Study Mentors to work with students in grades 8-12 to develop and execute field-based research projects for the regional science fair, run by the Southern AZ Research, Science, and Engineering Foundation (SARSEF). This is a unique opportunity to gain experience with science education and communication. Training will be provided for effective mentoring of students, along with support throughout the mentoring process and feedback to mentors on improving facilitation, teaching, and scientific process skills.
Here is some feedback from past mentors:
"I would have to say the field work in Sabino Canyon was the best part of the program. It was nice to be outdoors, working with the kids, and having a good time while working on the project."
"This program helped me to develop my leadership, collaboration, and mentorship skills. I greatly enjoy mentoring through science outreach, and this program allows me to hone my skills in mentoring through accessing my own resources and assisting the students."
"This experience really reinforced problem solving skills. The plant we were working with was hard to find in Sabino Canyon and we had to really time everything just right to make sure that we had enough viable samples to work with before the plants died. Also being around these super talented graduate students really gave me insight into several different fields of study that I hadn't considered before."
"It was so much more fun than I expected it to be, and working with the kids really was rewarding. Some of the kids I worked with had never thought about going into STEM fields before and throughout the program I could tell that they were becoming more and more interested. It was really neat to see that growth."
