On behalf of Dr. Hunt:
Course Schedulers (CC: HODS)
As most of you know, the outreach college will cease to exist this summer. In its place will be a new Distance Campus model that will operate similarly to UAOnline, but with a focus on specific physical locations away from the main UA campus (e.g., Yuma) where students can take UA courses and complete degrees. We have been working with Joel Hauff's office on a new and dramatically different pricing model for these programs, which we expect to be unveiled soon. Look for a message from Associate Dean Mike Staten on this exciting development as we move through the summer and more details are available.
With the phasing out of the outreach college, so comes the phasing out of the 910 section numbers we had previously used. Instead, students will become part of the distance college/campus when they apply (current students will be manually moved) and only able to register for classes with a distance attribute. Moving forward (spring 2017 courses) you will be able to choose "distance" as a campus for a course during the open scheduling period. The course should not appear to online or main campus students when they do a course search. However, you can still co-convene I-course, distance and main campus online sections in one course site on d2l for instructional purposes.
Simply put, you can choose almost any section number for the courses moving forward instead of the 910, however, you will need to fill in the campus field as "distance" to have the courses appear in the distance campus schedule of classes. Once you select distance you will need to select the appropriate campus (Yuma, Chandler, Paradise Valley).
Now the fun part. I would like CALS to adopt a universal section number for distance courses. Why? To be honest, it will make pulling the data on my end for analysis easier. ABE has selected 301 as the distance section number for their fall courses, though I am not sure a section number that high is best. I suggest that CALS utilize section 180-189 for distance campuses. Use numbers higher than 180 if you anticipate multiple distance sections in a term. This change would not occur until posting our spring courses for next year (which we should be doing right now).
Best,
Jim
