Thank you for taking a few moments to read the latest edition of Inside UA Transfer. Transfer students are incredibly important to the University of Arizona and we have great goals to educate more! New opportunities, in various modalities, are growing and we are now able to offer transfer students an outstanding traditional brick and mortar education, an engaging online experience or a focused experience at one of our distance sites. In addition,UA Online<http://arizona.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3d833db55ded5989c1009a651&id=25e4088652&e=8840c431ce> programs are being added on a regular basis which will further open the door for students to obtain a bachelor's degree from the UA, a top-ranked research institution.
As we move toward our 2025 goals, in line with the Arizona Board of Regents, UA will continue focus on transfer students, particularly from our Arizona Community Colleges. Students who transfer here do well. Here are a few important points about transfer student success:
* First-to-second year retention rate of AZ Community College transfers = 82.7%
* First-to-second year retention rate of upper division (generally coming in with an Associate's Degree) AZ CC transfers = 83.3%
* Four year graduation rate of AZ Community College transfers = 66.8%
* Four year graduation rate of upper division (generally coming in with an Associate's Degree) AZ CC transfers = 76.1%
Data from UAIR, 2/20/15
Our commitment to transfer students is at the highest level I have seen in my 20+ years working in a professional role at the UA. I am grateful for all of our partners who are making a difference in the lives of our future and current transfer students. It takes everyone to be on board and we appreciate your efforts.
Bear Down!

ETA members at the Eller's Pima Transfer Breakfast on January 12, 2016
The Eller College of Management focuses recruitment efforts on highly qualified transfer students by strengthening connections with community college partners and creating engagement opportunities to appeal to prospective transfer students interested in business.
As the University of Arizona implements the 100% engagement initiative, Eller College has considered how to engage our prospective transfer students, as well. Eller's Arizona Community College Excellence (ACCE) BusinessCase Competition is an annual event hosting teams from across Arizona. The students and their faculty coach get a taste of the Eller Experience by solving a real-life business dilemma and presenting their ideas to a panel of judges and peers. Students from the winning team are awarded an Eller scholarship if they choose to attend UA in the future. This year's ACCE Competition welcomed seven teams from multiple Pima Community College campuses, Glendale Community College, South Mountain Community College, and Phoenix College.
Another event used to engage community college faculty and staff is Eller's Annual Pima Transfer Breakfast. This event offers an opportunity to network among staff and business faculty at both institutions, discuss curriculum updates and industry trends, and hear success stories of students who transferred between our programs. Bringing everyone together to recognize the partnership between our institutions has been instrumental in building goodwill amongst our respective student support teams. The event has led to curriculum changes, classroom partnerships, and successful communication leading to student success. This year Eller was proud to recognize Pima's Nancy Meech as the recipient of the "Cat Walk Award" for her outstanding work with transfer initiatives and teaching of accounting.
Finally, the expanding transfer initiatives lead to the launch of a new student organization: Eller Transfer Ambassadors (ETA). ETA members conduct classroom visits and tabling events at the community college campuses, serve as mentors for incoming transfer students, and support Eller's transfer orientation and advising activities. For example, ETA's "Eller Insights" event at the Pima Downtown campus helps prepare Pima students for the competitive Eller admissions process, share helpful advice about professional development skills, and motivate students to apply to Eller. ETA helps Eller to build a pipeline of transfer student leaders and increase the footprint of transfer outreach activities significantly.

Thy Phi, Transfer Student Assistant
Two years ago I made the decision to transfer to the University of Arizona from San Diego Mesa Community College. It was one of the more difficult decisions of my life since I would be leaving behind more than just a school but a city, friends, and basically everything that I knew.
The first step was applying and I didn't have a clue about what I needed to do or even what the requirements were. I was able to find some information online but to confirm what I found and ease my worries I contacted the Transfer Student Center on campus. They were very helpful in clarifying the requirements and explaining to me what I should expect during the transfer application process. With more confidence I sat down and started my application and the beginning of my transfer journey. Several weeks later I received a letter in the mail and with great excitement I opened it to find my letter of acceptance to the University of Arizona, Honors College.
A few months passed by and I never made the effort to go to the Transfer Student Center, but rather went to the library like every cliche college movie I ever saw. Day after day I did my assignments without fail but never got a sense of community. It really felt like I was not going to have much of a chance at meeting new people and forming a supportive social circle of any kind. One day, I was tired of feeling alienated and decided to give the Transfer Student Center a visit. They had a smaller space than I had expected but it was much more inviting than the library ever felt so I found a comfy chair in the corner and started doing some homework. I found that when I needed a break, the staff was welcoming and I could strike up a conversation with students that were in a similar situation to me.
The Transfer Student Center not only provided social activities that allowed me to ease into the university community but held academic workshops that assisted with my scholarly transition as well.
