Helping students succeed for over 30 years.
Although it may be known as the best kept secret at the University of Arizona, the Writing Skills Improvement Program (WSIP) has actually been serving the U of A and larger Tucson communities for over thirty years. With a small staff that has never exceeded eight members, WSIP regularly provides services to over 2,000 participants each year. Our services include individual tutoring, small group tutoring, regular weekly workshops, summer institutes, special request workshops, and editing. WSIP programs are available to undergraduate and graduate students, U of A faculty and staff, and community members.

As WSIP prepares to mark a new milestone—36 years of service and relocation to new facilities near the center of the U of A main campus—we wanted to celebrate some of the people who have participated in our programs over the years. Each month, we will feature a WSIP alumni. In their own words, they tell readers about their experiences with WSIP.

Our first featured alumna is Dr. Tanisha Price Johnson.

TANISHA PRICE JOHNSON (PhD, Higher Education, University of Arizona; MEd, Educational Leadership, Northern Arizona University; B.S. in Journalism, University of Arizona.) Currently, I am the Executive Director of Admissions for the UA College of Medicine. My goal is to become a higher level administrator here or at another college or university.

My mother worked on campus and read about the summer program offerings (the summer between my Junior and Senior years of high school). I was selected for the program and that started my long-term relationship with the WSIP. I remained involved as I continued with my graduate studies by attending the writing workshops, attending the Graduate Writing Institute and dissertation tutoring until my degree completion three years ago. Additionally, the department I work for would hire writing tutors from the WSIP to instruct summer program participants.

Without the WSIP, I would have never survived the dissertation process. Receiving feedback on how to structure my thoughts and turn them into a document that is now used to frame holistic review within medical school admissions would not have been possible. The patience that the instructors, specifically John and Andrea, had with me gave me the confidence to write about my findings and my personal and professional experiences. I am so very grateful to this program!

I appreciate the opportunity to work for Dr. Maria Teresa Velez and other college partners to secure funding for this program. The fact that the services were free and that the tutors took their time to get to know you and your writing story was so helpful and eased my fear of writing.
I am always willing to serve and give back to the WSIP and I truly hope that as many students as possible are able to feel the positive impact I experienced during my time as a student.
