REMINDER: Apply for Native Agriculture & Food Systems College Scholarships

First Nations Development Institute is accepting applications for its First Nations Native Agriculture and Food Systems Scholarship Program (http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=izgsEZ3AHF3IMJ6w6MJLSI6E0bGLH%2BP1) that aims to encourage more Native American college students to enter the agricultural sector in Native communities.

First Nations will award five $1,000 scholarships to Native American college students majoring in agriculture and related fields, including but not limited to agribusiness management, agriscience technologies, agronomy, animal husbandry, aquaponics, fisheries and wildlife, food production and safety, food-related policy and legislation, horticulture, irrigation science, plant-based nutrition, and sustainable agriculture or food systems.

Complete information and a link to the online application can be found at
www.firstnations.org/grantmaking/ scholarship (http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=rtTpIWo2OCA1wAERnZTZ0o6E0bGLH%2BP1) . All applications must be completed and submitted by 5 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time on Wednesday, September 30, 2015.

To be eligible, applicants must:
* Be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student majoring in agriculture or an agricultural-related field, including food systems.
* Be Native American (enrolled member of a current or terminated federal/state tribe) and be able to provide documentation.
* Have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0.
* Demonstrate a commitment to helping his or her Native community reclaim local food-system control.

Applicants will be asked to complete an online application and provide other required information, including proof of tribal enrollment, college enrollment verification, unofficial transcripts, a letter of recommendation from a faculty member, and a short essay submission of 250 to 500 words.

First Nations believes that reclaiming control over local food systems is an important step toward ensuring the long-lasting health and economic well-being of Native people and communities. Native food-system control has the potential to increase food production, improve health and nutrition, and eliminate food insecurity in rural and reservation-based communities, while also promoting entrepreneurship and economic development. The purpose of the Native Agriculture and Food Systems Scholarship Program is to encourage more Native American college students to enter these fields so they can better assist their communities with these efforts.

The Office of Student Engagement is partnering with the student-led InnovateUA for their first initiative of the year - Pitchfest.

Pitchfest is part of a nationwide competition celebrating students and the power of their ideas. From September 25th to November 6th, students can log onto pitchfest.arizona.edu and upload a video explaining their big idea in one of 11 categories. The prize in each category starts at $500 - the more people participate, the higher the prize! Students have the opportunity to win up to $1000 for their idea!

The pitch is the new and improved elevator speech. In 3 minutes or less, students should film themselves talking about their idea. The key is to keep it short, clear, and passionate. Students can submit their video on pitchfest.arizona.edu (http://pitchfest.arizona.edu/) . The winning ideas in each of the 11 categories will receive a monetary prize of up to $1000.

In addition to competing as individuals, Pitchfest also includes a friendly competition between the colleges at the University of Arizona. The winning college will be the one with the most student pitches across all categories (relative to college size)! Each college will have one Talent Team Representative, a student nominated by the Dean of that college, who responsibilities will include promoting Pitchfest and staffing the Pitch Tables at the Main Library on Mondays or Wednesdays. The Talent Team students get the word out and get other students excited about participating!

You can read more about Pitchfest on pitchfest.arizona.edu (http://pitchfest.arizona.edu/) . Additionally, If you would like questions on how to craft a pitch or any other questions, please contact Laura Kurtzberg at laurak2 at email.arizona.edu (mailto:laurak2 at email.arizona.edu) .

As our first event of the year, Pitchfest has the opportunity to spread the word about InnovateUA (
innovateua.arizona.edu) and connect with students who are interested in entrepreneurship, innovation, technology, or expanding their education! We hope that students who participate in Pitchfest will consider joining InnovateUA as a volunteer or an organizer.
