Agriculture and Food Systems<br>
Scholarship Program</a> that aims to encourage more Native American college students to enter the agricultural sector in Native communities.<br>

First Nations will award five $1,000 scholarships to Native American college students majoring in agriculture and related fields, including but not limited to agribusiness management, agriscience technologies, agronomy, animal husbandry, aquaponics, fisheries and wildlife, food production and safety, food-related policy and legislation, horticulture, irrigation science, plant-based nutrition, and sustainable agriculture or food systems.<br>

First Nations believes that reclaiming control over local food systems is an important step toward ensuring the long-lasting health and economic well-being of Native people and communities. Native food-system control has the potential to increase food production, improve health and nutrition, and eliminate food insecurity in rural and reservation-based communities, while also promoting entrepreneurship and economic development. This updated version of our internship is still the LASC 493 (3 units) course designed for students intending to apply to medical school during the current application cycle, meaning those planning to start their program in 2017. If you are not in your third year at The University of Arizona or beyond, then you would not be in the 2017 application cycle. Through this internship, students have the opportunity to observe practicing physicians in their practices, develop mentoring relationships with health care professionals, explore career options, attend lectures to learn about important health care issues and prepare for the application to medical programs.<br>

COURSE OBJECTIVES:<br>

To further explore your career goals by talking with doctors and other health care professionals whose own career paths are congruent with your interests.<br>

To learn how major health care issues are manifested within the health care setting, i.e. professionalism, ethics, health care disparities and special populations, through weekly lectures on Thursdays 5-5:50 PM.<br>

To observe physicians in their workplaces and begin to develop communication and empathy skills fundamental to effective patient care.<br>

To prepare for writing the personal statement required in the medical school application.<br>

The UA Compost Cats are a student-run composting operation that diverts organic waste from landfills. Every year we organize waste management for Tucson Meet Yourself, one of the largest local events of the year.<br>

Around 100,000 people come through the festival and nearly all of them buy something to eat. We compost hundreds of pounds of waste from this festival, but we can't do it alone!<br>

Pitchfest is part of a nationwide competition celebrating students and the power of their ideas. From <strong>September 25th to November 6th</strong>, students can log onto <a href="http://arizona.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d02ce653ff78467d92a1ca720&id=ab0e2f3029&e=af2923c469" target="_blank" style="word-wrap: break-word;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;color: #003366;font-weight: normal;text-decoration: underline;">pitchfest.arizona.edu</a> and upload a video explaining their big idea in one of 11 categories. The prize in each category starts at $500 - the more people participate, the higher the prize! <u>Students have the opportunity to win up to $1000 for their idea!</u><br>

<strong>The pitch is the new and improved elevator speech. In 3 minutes or less, students should film themselves talking about their idea.</strong> The key is to keep it short, clear, and passionate. Each college will have one Talent Team Representative, a student nominated by the Dean of that college, who responsibilities will include promoting Pitchfest and staffing the Pitch Tables at the Main Library on Mondays or Wednesdays.
