Call for submissions: Symbiosis: An Exhibit of Biological Art
We are very excited to announce an upcoming science and art event titled “Symbiosis: An Exhibit of Biological Art” to be held on Monday, April 20 from 5-7pm in the Gould-Simpson main lobby. This event is meant to showcase the aesthetic appeal of the life sciences and celebrate the fusion of science and art. The event will be co-hosted by the Neuroscience and Cognitive Science (NSCS) Ambassadors and the Nu Rho Psi neuroscience honors society.
We welcome submissions from any UA affiliate (students, faculty, staff) as well as members of the local Tucson community. We are eager to collect as many submissions as we can, and we deeply appreciate your time and consideration.
We welcome any form of expression, from photos and paintings to sculptures and musical performances. Artwork can be put up for sale at the event (10% will go to the event organizers), donated to the event organizers to sell or keep on display, or simply displayed at the event and returned to the artist afterward. We feel that this is a great opportunity for scientists and artists alike to showcase their unique, interdisciplinary talent.

The University of Arizona chapter of Mortar Board National Senior Honor Society is proud to offer a number of different scholarships and awards to sophomore and junior students.

MORTAR BOARD SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1983, the scholarship is awarded annually to an individual who most exemplifies the qualities that Mortar Board demands of its own members: outstanding scholarship, leadership, and service to both the University of Arizona and the community. Both men and women with sophomore standing (completed 30-60 units) and pursuing any undergraduate major are eligible to apply for this scholarship. The award may amount up to $500.

JODY WINN-ODEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This award was established in 1984 in memory of Jody Winn-Oden, a pre-medical student and member of Mortar Board National Senior Honor Society, who was tragically killed that year in a car accident. Both men and women with junior standing (completed >60 units) pursuing a pre-medical curriculum or majoring in nursing are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Selection will be based upon the ability to convey outstanding character, leadership, and service, as well as sincere dedication to the healthcare profession. The award amount is at least $500.

Apply today for the AFA Crop Science Institute held in Central Iowa, July 19-21^st, 2015. AFA will be selecting up to 75 passionate, talented and committed students who are future leaders in the industry to take part in the AFA Crop Science Institute. You may be wondering why you should attend the AFA Crop Science Institute?
1. Networking: At the AFA Crop Science Institute you will network with other highly talented students interested in the crop sciences from across the nation. 2. Industry Tours: During the institute, one day will be committed to you learning the scope of careers within the agronomy and crop sciences industry. This means you will interact with professionals all across the sector.
3. Soft Skill development: While networking is important, so are the skills to do the job. At the AFA Crop Science Institute, they will take time to help train you in just a few of the important soft skills you’ll use as a professional in the industry.
4. The AFA High: There is no way you can leave the Institute without being excited about agriculture and the future. AFA helps you define your future goals and hone your skills. When you go back to campus, you will be able to make more meaning of why you are on campus – whether you are in class or in a club meeting.

The 2015 Montgomery & Associates Summer Writing Internship at the WRRC
The University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) is offering a summer internship to a student interested in gaining experience writing about environmental and water issues. The internship is supported by Montgomery & Associates, an Arizona-based consulting firm specializing in hydrology and water resource issues. The selected intern will contribute to research and writing for an issue of Arroyo, the annual WRRC publication that focuses on a critical Arizona water issue. Arroyo is recognized as source of objective, accurate and understandable information and reaches a wide audience that includes policy makers and water professionals as well as the interested public.
The topic selected for the 2016 Arroyo is potable water reuse. It will provide an overview of history, plans, technologies, water quality concerns, regulations, and public acceptance issues regarding the potable reuse of water in Arizona.
Enrolled students in good standing at the University of Arizona, Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University are eligible. The intern will work approximately 20 hours per week for 10 weeks between the end of May and the beginning of August 2015 for a stipend of $2,500.
The intern will work at the WRRC offices in Tucson. The successful applicant will be responsible for his/her own accommodations.

The letter of recommendation should come from a faculty member familiar with applicant’s writing.

Project SOAR (Fall HED 350; Spring HED 397B): (mailto:coe.arizona.edu/soar) a service-learning course that places undergraduate mentors at under-resourced middle schools in Tucson. Mentors meet with the middle school youth weekly, addressing the following topics:
-Academic strengths
-Self-esteem
-Conflict resolution
-Career exploration
-College search process
STEM Project SOAR (Fall HED 350 Section 3; Spring HED 397B Section 3): (mailto:facebook.com/UAProjectSOAR) STEM major undergraduate students will act as experts in their STEM field to mentor their STEM interested middle school mentee. In addition to the traditional curriculum of Project SOAR, the STEM undergraduates will learn STEM and Possible Selves activities to administer with their middle school mentee. The Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Arizona's Mediterranean Diet & Health Study Abroad Program offers a summer class in Verona, Italy, a beautiful and historic Northern Italian city. The syllabus includes discussions of the epidemiological and preclinical evidence related to the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet against chronic diseases (cancer, obesity, diabetes, etc) as well hands-on culinary experiences with Italian chefs and food experts. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the approach to food preparation, agriculture and community-based cultural activities characteristic to the Mediterranean region. Excursions include meetings with food producers, visits to olive oil, pasta, and cheese processing plants as well as touring of historic sites including the Roman downtown of Verona, and opportunities to attend musical and opera events. Verona is located in close proximity to Venice, Milan, and Florence.
This 6-credit course is designed for students who have minimum sophomore standing, junior, and senior students in nutritional sciences, biological, physiological and related biomedical and social sciences, as well as undergraduate students who have a comparable background in the science and health fields.
This unique program begins on May 18th 2015 with coursework at the University of Arizona in Tucson, then continues from May 24 through June 20th, 2015 in Verona, Italy. Students not residing in Tucson during the first week will have the option of online participation.

The Border Latino & American Indian Summer Exposure to Research (BLAISER) is a new ten week program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson (COM-T) designed to help students become empowered and competitive Medical School, Health Professions and Graduate School applicants. This opportunity is for undergraduates majoring in the biomedical fields to learn about the bench-to-bedside research process and prepare for a translational career in biomedical research or academic medicine.
