Subject: [UPAC] Tier 1 Section Registration Difficulties
Hi. Yesterday I had a student write to me asking why there were a lot of lecture seats in ANTH 150B1 and no discussion seats associated with the lecture. I've had this question before but never had time to investigate it. In the Uaccess system it is clearly difficult to figure out that lectures with over 5 section have a second page listing discussion sections in the registration process. I have requested that IT look into this and see if they can configure the system so that the opening default allows students to view all the sections immediately, but they aren't sure they can reconfigure it to do this. In the meantime if your department has large Tier 1 Classes with more than 5 sections you might want to forward this notice to your students, as they are having a hard time seeing that there is a second page listing additional sections. The effect of this is clear to us: in our ANTH 150B1, sections A-E (visible when a student goes to register) are completely filled, while sections F-H (on the second page) have many, many seats available. They aren't seeing the second page of the section list.
Best, Ann

Hi. If you are signing up for a Tier 1 Class and find seats in the lecture, but don't see any seats open in the associated discussion sections, be aware that this is a function of an obfuscation in our UAccess System. Let me use ANTH 150B1 as an example. It has eight sections. If you try to register for the course you will find lots of open lecture seats, and be presented with a list of five discussion sections (A-E). All of these sections are currently full. Many students don't realize that there are actually two pages in the UAccess system which list the discussion sections. To get to the second page you can use either use the "View All" option, or the "First" and "Last" options which allow you to toggle back and forth from the first to the second page. There is also apparently an option to "view open sections" somewhere on the registration page as well, but I have not viewed this personally. If you go to the final three sections (F-H) you will find lots of open seats in the discussion sections.
It seems that in the UAccess system if there are more than five discussion sections associated with a class, UAccess puts the sixth and beyond sections on a second page. Please keep this in mind if you are having difficulties registering for a lecture class with lots of seats but which seems to have no visible discussion sections to join.
Best, Ann
