Subject: [UPAC] UA Supporting Nepal Victims
Please distribute as you see fit. Thank you.
Hi all,
Thousands of people have been killed by a massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Nepal on April 25, 2015. There is widespread devastation across Nepal. The death toll, now over 4,400, continues to rise as search and rescue efforts are underway in Kathmandu and across the country. People are still trapped under collapsed buildings in Kathmandu, and there is no way to accurately guess how many are in need throughout the other cities and thousands of villages at this time.
We have been hearing that villages - especially those closest to the epicenter - have been the most devastated. Some initial reports suggest that many villages have been totally flattened by the quake and there are many villages where any rescue team hasn't reached yet. There have been dozens of tremors and aftershocks since the first earthquake, further destabilizing structures and complicating rescue efforts.
The immediate need on the ground is for medical support, search and rescue, emergency shelters and food and water among many other things. As the days, weeks and months go by and after the humanitarian needs are addressed, Nepal will need to begin the healing and rebuilding process. The magnitude of the damage is still being assessed, but hundreds of buildings have collapsed including many homes and many of Nepal’s ancient and iconic temples and monuments.
As University of Arizona students, we will be setting a tent in front of the student union today (Tuesday - 4/28/2015) starting at 10:00am till afternoon, to distribute the current situation in Nepal to all wildcats. Everyone who wants to volunteer and contribute to relief efforts is welcomed. We will be having poster presentations along with the description of the painful catastrophe all over the region. Also fliers will be distributed to everyone to give the basic knowledge. There will also be presentation of videos captured during the earthquake. Around noon, there will be some live soft eastern instrumental music performance. We will also have some delicious cookies, food, ice-pop, and cupcakes for you to get, and there will be a donation box to collect funds, that we expect all wildcats to generously contribute to the earthquake relief efforts.
We, as wildcats, would like to help the earthquake victims as much as possible and get our name (University of Arizona) to be mentioned to have a great contribution to relief efforts. Any single dollar you will drop in the donation box will make a huge difference in earthquake victims' lives. Let's everyone stand up and donate generously. Please spread the word and encourage the people around you to contribute. Please use your social media (facebook, twitter, instagram, etc.) and h/t us as #NepalReliefUofA and share with your friends.
Your donations will go through Red Cross, Unicef, Global Giving, Americares and suchlike organizations, and we will distribute 100% of the funds accordingly, based on the latest needs on the ground. We will continue to provide updates and information regarding the allocation of funds.
Thank you all for your support.
