Subject: [UPAC] Improvement to Tier I Exceptions Pairing
Hello.
We're happy to announce that additional improvements have been made to the
exceptions pairing page that will help with exceptions made to Tier I areas.
Previously, if a transfer course was substituted to a Tier I line advisors
would have to manually select all related courses they wanted to excluded.
That is a time consuming and monotonous process, so most of the time
transfer courses were not paired meaning a student could complete a Tier I
area with two classes that were of the same thematic area.
The improvement to this page will automatically select other Tier I courses
within a theme once the advisor selects one of those courses for pairing
(for example, all 170Cs, 160Bs, or 150As within a requirement).
In this example, let's say the ELCR 1TR transfer course is similar to ANTH
150A1.
In the past, an advisor could choose ANTH 150A1 as the paired course but the
student would still be able to fulfill the Tier I INDV area with ART 150A1
unless the advisor manually checked it and all the subsequent 150A courses.
Now, however, checking any of those 150A courses will automatically check
the others.
When the "Pair" button is clicked all of those courses are paired with the
ELCR 1TR and thus excluded as options for Tier I INDV:
On the advising report you'll see a list of those excluded courses:
Those course will also no longer display in the Courses Available section on
the advising report:
The goals of this modification are to make advising reports more accurate
and more easily align the advising reports with the intent of the advisor's
exception. Pairing courses, in Tier I or anywhere on the advising report,
provides students with better course predictions on their Smart Planner. The
modification also helps ensure that students are fulfilling the spirit of
the Tier I areas by taking courses in different thematic areas.
Please note, that once you check a course and other courses are selected you
do have to manually uncheck them all. This is so you can uncheck any of the
courses you don't want to be paired, should you choose. If you accidentally
check the wrong course the easiest way to fix the problem would be to cancel
out of the Pairing page without saving and then going back in to the
Maintain Course Replacement page. This action will nullify any changes you
had made on the Pairing page.
