Renée Schafer-Horton, The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences

My name is Renée Schafer Horton, and I want to change the world. Lacking the
power to do that, I would like to make a positive impact at the University
through serving as a UPAC co-chair!

I’ve been an academic advisor since February of 2011, advising the 500+
majors and pre-majors in the School of Journalism. This year I was honored
to receive the Outstanding Emerging Professional Advisor Award and I’m
co-author (with Alan Beaudrie) of a proposal on advising-as-teaching that
has been accepted for presentation at the 2012 NACADA National Convention.

UPAC has been a great support for me in my brief advising career and I want
to become more involved with the organization on a leadership level. I
believe I bring energy and ideas that could help continue UPAC’s history of
providing great programming and support to advisors. Additionally, I’d
propose contributing in three other ways:

· Help develop and advocate for an advising career ladder to
recognize stellar advisors with greater responsibility and compensation. It
is depressing to see advisors leave the field for administrative posts
simply because the money is better. The lack of a defined career path leads
to turnover that negatively affects students.

· Help develop a cohesive new-advisor training system that includes
exposure to various non-advising offices advisors deal with frequently (i.e.
Registrar, Veteran’s Services, DRC, Admissions) and formally pairs emerging
advisors with mentors from the senior advising community

· Help encourage more collaboration among advisors through targeted,
quarterly, cross-discipline small-group advising meetings.

I appreciate you considering my nomination and thank you for your time.

Kyle Sharp, The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences

In my relatively short tenure as an advisor I have seen the benefits UPAC
provides to its members and the campus community as a whole. By keeping
advisors informed of changes, advocating for the interests of advisors, and
helping advisors develop a community of support UPAC is essential to
continuing the growth of superior advising across campus. My diverse
experiences and background will help me bring new insights to the UPAC
leadership and assist in adding value to the lives of its members. As a
UPAC Co-Chair I would facilitate the sharing of best practices throughout
the advising community with regard to managing limited resources to help
grow professionally as well as assist students in defining and reaching
their goals as efficiently as possible.

Jared Burton, The University of Arizona South

Hello fellow UPAC members! I am Jared Burton and I am a relatively new
advisor to the University of Arizona working in a satellite location in
Sierra Vista. I have enjoyed my short time here and would like to be much
more involved in the advising community. I feel that the opportunity to be a
UPAC Co-chair will not be lost on me as I feel that academic advising is one
of the most important positions in any higher education institution. Thus
through our combined efforts we can continue to build up our institution and
take pride in our craft. We owe it to our students, the institution and
ourselves to constantly be seeking avenues of personal growth and
professional development. I would be absolutely thrilled if selected to be a
co-chair of this great committee and continue to building upon a solid
foundation of like-minded individuals who want to generate the best in
ourselves and our surroundings.
