Tuesday Morning Notes

May 6, 2014

FROM THE DIRECTOR - The Cooperative Extension Centennial:

centennialredblueoutlines1.25X1.25Thursday, 8 May is the exact date of the
100th anniversary for the beginning of Cooperative Extension (CE) due to the
signing of the Smith-Lever Act by President Woodrow Wilson on 8 May 1914.
The Smith-Lever Act was introduced by Senator Hoke Smith of Georgia and
Representative A.F. Lever of South Carolina. This created a federal law
that provided distinct funding for Extension programs at each of the
land-grant universities founded by the Morrill Act of 1862.

We are going to celebrate this Centennial on 8 May for CE with a special
event that is taking place in Tucson at the University of Arizona (UA)
Campus Agricultural Center (CAC), which is on North Campbell Avenue directly
across the street from the Pima County Cooperative Extension office. The
program is available on our Centennial website
<https://extension.arizona.edu/southeastern-arizona-centennial-celebration>
.

This is the second of the four regional events that we are conducting across
the state this year in celebration of the CE Centennial. Our first
Centennial event was held in Yuma on 27 February in conjunction with the
Southwest Ag Summit. The third event is scheduled for 24 July at the V Bar
V Ranch in Yavapai County. Then the final CE Centennial event for Arizona
will be on 4 October at the Phoenix Zoo.

The Centennial event this week on 8 May at the CAC represents the hard work
and collective efforts from five counties in southeastern Arizona: Pima,
Santa Cruz, Cochise, Graham, and Greenlee. Collectively, this includes five
CE units and two agricultural centers including the CAC and the Safford
Agricultural Center. Thus, this event will highlight many of the programs
going on in CE and it also provides the opportunity to demonstrate the close
integration that we have among our programs with our CE units and Arizona
Experiment Station (AES) units. For many people working in our College of
Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), this integration among the CE and AES
components is an essential and basic way of doing business on a day-to-day
basis. So it is important to demonstrate this integration among CE and AES
elements in CALS since this is a very important aspect of CE within our own
college.

Please make an effort to join us in this celebration for CE Centennial on 8
May in Tucson. I also encourage you to take advantage of the events at the
V Bar V and in Phoenix later this year and to utilize the opportunity to
gain a better understanding of the breadth of programs that are taking place
across the State of Arizona as a part of CALS by way of our CE system.

IN MEMORIUM:

Kim Gressley's father passed away on April 17 after battling a broken back
injury along with double pneumonia for three months. Elbert L. "Bert"
Scouten was a Real Estate Broker/Owner of Eureka Realty for over 25 years in
the Tucson valley area and had served as a 4-H project leader for market
sheep and assisted with the livestock judging team for the Tanque Verde
Livestock 4-H club. The Scouten Memorial will be held at Christ
Presbyterian Church in Tucson on May 17 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to Christ Presbyterian Church or the charity of your
choice in Bert's name.

FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:

The Desert Water Harvesting Initiative (DWHI), a program of the Water
Resources Research Center at the UA, has released its new Water Harvesting
Assessment Toolbox <http://wrrc.arizona.edu/DWHI/toolbox> . This
decision-support guide aims to help communities in the arid and semi-arid
Southwest evaluate water harvesting as a strategy for meeting water resource
challenges and providing multiple additional benefits, such as mitigating
urban heat island effects, reducing energy costs and meeting stormwater
quality regulations. As climate change increasingly impacts supply and
demand balances, water harvesting can become an important component of a
community's response. Because water harvesting intersects with many
community concerns and jurisdictions, the Toolbox is designed to be used in
a group setting by multiple representatives who have diverse perspectives
and interests. Detailed instructions are provided in the Toolbox to enable
a facilitator to lead the group through the water harvesting assessment
process. Facilitated group discussions will help users create a
community-specific roadmap for undertaking water harvesting in their area.
A presentation template is included in the Toolbox to guide users in sharing
their roadmap with decision-makers and the public. The Water Harvesting
Assessment Toolbox was produced by a team supported by funding through the
Desert Landscape Conservation Cooperative, in conjunction with the Bureau of
Reclamation's WaterSMART grant program. This Toolbox is a prototype, and
any and all feedback on ease of use, effectiveness, and suggested
improvements is welcomed. If you have any questions or comments, contact
Susanna Eden <mailto:seden at cals.arizona.edu> or Jackie Moxley
<mailto:jmoxley at cals.arizona.edu> .

DAN KLINGENBERG SELECTED FOR NATIONAL 4-H HALL OF FAME:

Dan Klingenberg of Scottsdale has been selected as our nominee to be
inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame. His induction will take place
on October 10 back at the National 4-H Center. Throughout his youth, Dan
was active in 4-H club leadership, citizenship and project work, and he was
the recipient of various achievement awards, including National 4-H Congress
in Chicago (1957), National 4-H Conference in Washington, D.C. (1958), and a
Standard Oil Company 4-H Scholarship. As the sole recipient of a National
4-H Center Fellowship, he spent a year (1959-60) directing portions of the
4-H Center's Citizenship Short Course Program and giving tours of the
nation's capital to 4-H club members, volunteer leaders and extension agents
from around the country. Dan started his career as a County 4-H Extension
Agent in Yuma. Later, he joined the United States Peace Corps for two years
in Venezuela. His Peace Corps assignment, led by the National 4-H Club
Foundation, concentrated on improving and developing the many 5 V clubs
active in the rural areas of the country (similar to 4-H in the U.S.). Dan
has a history of giving back to 4-H and the community, is a long-time 4-H
supporter who has served 15 years on the Arizona 4-H Foundation, has been a
committed supporter of the James 4-H Camp and the College of Agriculture &
Life Sciences, and was also inducted into the Arizona 4-H Hall of Fame.
Congratulations to Dan and we are pleased that he will join a distinguish
group of other inductees from Arizona.
