Thus, this event will highlight many of the programs going on in CE and it also provides the opportunity to demonstrate the close integration that we have among our programs with our CE units and Arizona Experiment Station (AES) units. For many people working in our College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), this integration among the CE and AES components is an essential and basic way of doing business on a day-to-day basis. This decision-support guide aims to help communities in the arid and semi-arid Southwest evaluate water harvesting as a strategy for meeting water resource challenges and providing multiple additional benefits, such as mitigating urban heat island effects, reducing energy costs and meeting stormwater quality regulations. As climate change increasingly impacts supply and demand balances, water harvesting can become an important component of a community’s response. Because water harvesting intersects with many community concerns and jurisdictions, the Toolbox is designed to be used in a group setting by multiple representatives who have diverse perspectives and interests. Detailed instructions are provided in the Toolbox to enable a facilitator to lead the group through the water harvesting assessment process. Facilitated group discussions will help users create a community-specific roadmap for undertaking water harvesting in their area. A presentation template is included in the Toolbox to guide users in sharing their roadmap with decision-makers and the public. The Water Harvesting Assessment Toolbox was produced by a team supported by funding through the Desert Landscape Conservation Cooperative, in conjunction with the Bureau of Reclamation’s WaterSMART grant program. This Toolbox is a prototype, and any and all feedback on ease of use, effectiveness, and suggested improvements is welcomed. His induction will take place on October 10 back at the National 4-H Center. Throughout his youth, Dan was active in 4-H club leadership, citizenship and project work, and he was the recipient of various achievement awards, including National 4-H Congress in Chicago (1957), National 4-H Conference in Washington, D.C. (1958), and a Standard Oil Company 4-H Scholarship. As the sole recipient of a National 4-H Center Fellowship, he spent a year (1959-60) directing portions of the 4-H Center’s Citizenship Short Course Program and giving tours of the nation’s capital to 4-H club members, volunteer leaders and extension agents from around the country. Dan started his career as a County 4-H Extension Agent in Yuma. Later, he joined the United States Peace Corps for two years in Venezuela. His Peace Corps assignment, led by the National 4-H Club Foundation, concentrated on improving and developing the many 5 V clubs active in the rural areas of the country (similar to 4-H in the U.S.). Dan has a history of giving back to 4-H and the community, is a long-time 4-H supporter who has served 15 years on the Arizona 4-H Foundation, has been a committed supporter of the James 4-H Camp and the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences, and was also inducted into the Arizona 4-H Hall of Fame.
