Tuesday Morning Notes
September 17, 2013
FROM THE DIRECTOR:
I would like to offer a brief follow up to my comments offered in the
Tuesday Morning Notes of 10 September where I described some recent feedback
from the Extension Agricultural Advisory Council regarding engagement of
faculty and staff in programs in the field with stakeholders.
That note was not meant to say that everybody in ag and natural resource
programs in Extension are not engaging with stakeholders in the field, but
rather that there seem to be some areas of programming that could benefit by
enhancing or strengthening our direct contact and interactions with
stakeholders at the local level. It's also important to note the
significance of having direct engagement with stakeholders in the
communities, on the range, in the fields, or wherever our programs are
directed. The Extension maxim has always been: "Start with people where
they are, not where you want them to be." This principle is fundamental to
work in delivering Extension programs and relevant to any of our program
areas, not just agriculture and natural resources.
For all of those faculty and staff in Cooperative Extension (CE) that are
actively engaging with stakeholders and working in their field of operation,
my message to you is simply "thank you - keep up the good work!" For those
of you who upon review of your own programs see a need for improvement with
stakeholder engagement, I encourage you to do so. For anyone in question
regarding their level of involvement with stakeholders, I encourage you to
have some direct interaction with those stakeholder groups with whom you
work and to ask how your work is being received.

CONDOLENCES:
Our thoughts go out to Bill Brandau whose mother, Evelyn Brandau, passed
away at the age of 88 on August 7. The family held a "Family
Gathering/Memorial" Service this past Saturday, September 14, at their home
in Beeville, Texas. Since she loved gardening, the family decided to spread
her ashes in the home garden.
FOCUS ON STAFF:
Haley Paul, Assistant in Extension at Maricopa County Cooperative has taken
a new position as Water Conservation Specialist with the Town of Gilbert,
Arizona and her last day was Friday, September 13. We will all miss her
enthusiasm and endless effort in Extension but we also wish her the best in
her new position.
FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:
* Sign Up for the 4-H Centennial BBQ & Celebration - The early-bird
deadline for tickets to the Arizona 4-H Centennial BBQ & Celebration is this
Friday, September 20. After this date, all tickets are $20. Don't
delay--register this week at the Arizona 4-H Centennial BBQ website
<http://www.tinyurl.com/AZ4HBBQ> and plan to join this grand event.
* Science City Applications Due October 4 - Once again the College of
Agriculture & Life Sciences is participating in the Tucson Festival of Books
through Science City. Those groups and individuals interested in having a
presence in Science City will need to submit an application by October 4 to
be considered. This year's Science City will have 4 thematic neighborhoods
and you can select the one that most closely matches your area. Science
City is a great way to help the public understand the diversity of science,
technology and engineering that is going on in CALS. To reserve your space,
visit the Science City website <http://www.sciencecity.arizona.edu/> and
look toward the right for the tab that reads "Apply!"
* Arizona School IPM Program: Leading Efforts Towards Safer Schools -
The Arizona School IPM program plays a lead role in the development and
implementation of school IPM at the state, regional and national levels.
Their unique program, led by a multi-disciplinary group of experts, provides
school districts with a "one-stop expert advice system" covering indoor and
outdoor school environments: an approach widely appreciated by
stakeholders. Read more about the program at the Western Region School IPM
Work Group website <http://cals.arizona.edu/apmc/westernschoolIPM.html> .
* Arizona Project WET Awarded Freeport-McMoRan Grant for Green
Valley/Sahuarita Water Festival - Arizona Project WET (APW) was recently
awarded a Community Investment Fund grant of $11,950 from Freeport-McMoRan
to help fund its Arizona Water Festival in Green Valley and Sahuarita. This
expansion adds to APW's growing list of Water Festivals, which are currently
held in Flagstaff, Payson, the Verde Valley, Chandler, Gilbert, Apache
Junction, Casa Grande, Yuma, Tucson and Nogales. The Arizona Water Festival
brings a lively, interactive exploration of the groundwater system,
watersheds, the water cycle, and water conservation to fourth-grade students
in an effort to create a better understanding of the desert environment and
the vital resources needed to sustain life. For more information, visit
