Tuesday Morning Notes
October 1, 2013
FROM THE DIRECTOR:
There are five basic objectives or goals for Cooperative Extension (CE)
consistent with our strategic plan that I tend to emphasize. These five
goals are fundamental to our operational plans and strategic outlines for
CE.
1) Development and delivery of strong and effective programs in CE among
all program areas. Strong and effective programs are both fully engaged
with stakeholders and productive.
2) Programs in CE need to be well integrated both vertically and
horizontally. Vertical integration represents strong linkages from
campus-based programs and centers to county-based programs and stakeholders.
Well integrated programs also involve effective lines of communication both
from the university and CE extending outward into the communities and also
the same communities effectively communicating back to the university and
the points of program initiation. Horizontal integration represents an
operational collection of appropriate expertise working together in program
delivery.
3) We will employ an asymmetric distribution of resources across the
state for the development and delivery of Extension programs. Resources
will be distributed and oriented in terms of need and the capacity to forge
effective partnerships with stakeholders.
4) CE needs to have an enhanced level of exposure within CALS, across the
UA system, and throughout the state of Arizona.
5) CE will operate with fiscal responsibility and efficiency with an
improved capacity to analyze the economic impact of our programs.
As we deal with the broad range of issues associated with managing and
directing CE in Arizona, these five basic goals commonly serve as foundation
points.
IN MEMORIUM:
On Monday, September 23, Robert E. Dennis, Sr., agronomist and former
professor of plant sciences, passed away. Dennis taught agriculture and
biology in Michigan high schools, 1946-1951, joined the staff of Michigan
State University in 1951, receiving his Ph.D. in 1958, and in 1959 was
appointed Extension Agronomist and Professor of Plant Sciences at the
University of Arizona. He served in that position for 24 years. Services
for Robert were held on Saturday, September 28 at 10:00am at East Lawn Palms
Mortuary and Cemetery. For more information and background about Robert, go

FOCUS ON FACULTY:
Over 15 CALS-CE faculty attended the recent Galaxy IV conference in
Pittsburgh, PA. The conference was filled with educational opportunities
and several faculty (too many to name) gave presentations. Several faculty
also received awards and recognition for their Extension work. Among them
were: 1) ANREP - Chris Jones, Distinguished Career Leadership Award, 2)
NACAA - Chris Jones, Distinguished Service Award; Ayman Mostafa, Achievement
Award; Monica Pastor, Ag Awareness and Appreciation Award, 3) NAE4-HA - Amy
Parrot, Regional Award; Curt Peters, Excellence in 4-H Club Support; Darcy
Tessman and Kim Gressley, Communication and Publication Awards, and 4)
NEAFCS - Traci Armstrong Florian, Communications Awards; Cathy Martinez,
Regional Community Partnership Award; Evelyn Whitmer, Continued Excellence,
Florence Hall National Award and Awards for the First Smiles program. Kim
Gressley was also reinstated as President-Elect of NEAFCS. Congratulations
to everyone - well done!
FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:
On Thursday, September 26 the "UA Cooperative Extension Maricopa County
Jammers," a group of staff and faculty in the Maricopa County office, took
"JAM" (Just A Minute) to gather together to engage in the 2013 JAM World
RecordR day event, joining millions around the world to break the 2012 JAM
World RecordR day of 1,302,187 participants! Extension faculty and staff
signed up to participate in this event in an effort to support making
exercise a part of daily healthy habits. Momentum built, people engaged,
and exercise fun was had by all! Many thanks to Liz Schnoll, Health
Educator, Sr. in the SNAP-Ed Program, overseen by Extension Agent, Traci
Armstrong Florian, MS, RD, for putting together such a great event -
awareness of exercising for health was achieved!
COUNTY APPROPRIATION FORMS:
As a part of Carolyne Greeno's budgetary duties with Extension
Administration, she will be taking over the processing of all aspects of the
County Appropriation Forms (from sending out new forms to processing and
invoicing). She has been working with Lynda Silvain in CALS Admin to
transition the current year process, so if you have any questions in that
area, please contact Carolyne <mailto:cagreeno at cals.arizona.edu> directly.
DATA MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP - OCTOBER 2:
A reminder that the first Data Management Workshop takes place tomorrow -
October 1 from 1:00-2:00pm in Forbes 307. Given the importance and
necessity of preparing Data Management Plans by many grant funding agencies,
a campus group has developed resources to assist faculty and staff in such
efforts. The workshop will be led by the UA Libraries, the Data Management
Service supports faculty and researchers developing data management plans.
During the workshop Chris Kollen, Data Curation Librarian, and Cindy
Elliott, Science Librarian, will review the Research Data Life Cycle,
funding agency requirements for sharing data, the DMP Tool for preparing
data management plans, data management tips, and Library and Campus
consulting services. You can also check out the Data Management Resources
website <http://data.library.arizona.edu/> . There will also be another
workshop on October 15 from 10:00-11:00am in Forbes 307. If you would like
to register for one of the workshops or would like more information, contact
Chris Kollen <mailto:kollenc at u.library.arizona.edu>
