Tuesday Morning Notes

August 20, 2013

FROM THE DIRECTOR:

An essential element of all units in CALS is to have the capacity to address
a full range of business operations. These business operations include:
tracking all unit revenues and expenditures for all accounts, processing
personnel actions, purchasing, travel, etc. Every unit has a need for
timely, accurate, and thorough processing in all areas of business
operations. Therefore, since good business operations are a fundamental
part of unit management, this is ultimately the responsibility of the unit
leader.

A strong and efficient business office is also essential for CALS
Cooperative Extension (CE) Administration. A business office in CALS CE
needs to be able to effectively manage all administration and program
accounts, maintain an accounting of all appropriated funding to CE, and, of
course, address all of the aforementioned factors associated with any
business office. Last year we made an attempt to consolidate the CALS CE
business functions with CALS Administration. From the lessons learned from
those experiences over the past year, we have decided to form a new
consolidated business structure in CALS CE and assign a Business Manager,
Senior position to direct it.

The person in this Business Manager, Senior position will begin the process
of building this new business management structure in CALS CE. We have just
hired Carolyne Greeno, formerly a part of the CALS Grants and Contracts unit
in the Experiment Station Office, to fill this Business Manager, Senior
position and we can now begin the process of building this new business
management structure in CALS CE. Please join me in welcoming Carolyne to
CALS CE and her new position.

MARICOPA COUNTY EXTENSION DIRECTOR SEMINAR:

On August 19, Dr. Edward Martin presented the first of two Maricopa County
Extension Director candidate seminars, titled "Maricopa County Cooperative
Extension: An Agent of Change in 2021," at the Maricopa County Extension
offices in Phoenix. On Thursday, August 29, Dr. Hector Santiago will make
his presentation in Phoenix. All candidates will be meeting with the
Director, the rest of the Extension Administration Team, and the Dean.

FOCUS ON FACULTY:

For anyone attending Galaxy IV this September in Pittsburgh, you may want to
check out a Super Seminar being organized by Chris Jones and Mark Apel,
entitled "Communicating Climate Change and Sustainability Issues Through
Extension Programming." The seminar will have panelists representing all
associations in Extension and is intended to be interactive and informative.
The Super Seminar will be on Thursday, September 19 from 9:00-11:00am in the
Convention Center. If you have any questions, contact Chris Jones
<mailto:ckjones at cals.arizona.edu> or Mark Apel
<mailto:mapel at cals.arizona.edu> .

FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:

The 2012 Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) Annual Report
<https://wrrc.arizona.edu/annual-report-2012> is now available for
download. Explore the report to learn more about the WRRC, its collaborative
research, programs, publications and outreach. In 2012, the WRRC
experienced growth and changes to its staff and programs and made progress
toward its strategic goals.

4-H/Japanese Exchange Program - Yesterday, our exchange delegation of 11
youth and one adult chaperone returned to Japan after a month of cultural
exchange and home stays here in Arizona. Thanks to all who supported this
year's program to increase cultural understanding and connections with
Japan. A special thanks to Kay Hongu, Rachel Turner (Kay's graduate
student), Erin Gries, Sandra Saad, Tina Christiansen and Linda Block for
their assistance and support. This year we focused on involvement in "Walk
Across Arizona" as a family project and over 12,000 miles were logged by the
participants. Many thanks, too, to our Extension agents who have prompted
the program and helped us find great host families all around the state. We
plan to continue this program next year and will be looking again for host
families after January 1.

FY 2014-15 SABBATICAL LEAVE REQUESTS:

Extension faculty applications for sabbatical leave
<http://facultyaffairs.arizona.edu/faculty_leave> for 2014-2015 are due
October 1 to CEDs and November 1 to Jeffrey C. Silvertooth c/o pattiB (and
then due to the Associate Dean for Academic Programs by November 12). All
applications must be reviewed by the CALS Sabbatical Leave Committee and
approved by the Dean. You must submit an original and three copies of the
application and the letter of support from the unit head which must address
how teaching or other major responsibilities will be covered. Instructions
and forms can be accessed from the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs
<http://facultyaffairs.arizona.edu/sabbatical_leave> web page. If you have
questions at the Extension level, either see your CED or contact Patti B.
<mailto:pattib at ag.arizona.edu> (520.621.5308). If you have questions at
the CALS level, contact Audrey Levine <mailto:alevine at email.arizona.edu>

SEEKING PRESENTERS FOR SCIENCE CITY AT THE FESTIVAL OF BOOKS:

The steering committee is already planning for the 2014 Tucson Festival of
Books (TFOB), March 15-16, 2014, here on the UA Campus. The TFOB is the
fourth largest book festival in the country and the largest non-profit
festival of its kind. Science City continues to grow and we want to
encourage all of you to consider being part of this huge public event to
bring greater awareness to your programs and efforts. This year, Science
City will be organized into 4 neighborhoods - 1) the Science of Everyday
Living, 2) Science of the Natural World, 3) Science of Tomorrow, and 4)
Science of You. An online application is available on the Science City
website <http://www.sciencecity.arizona.edu/> for proposal submission.
Deadline for proposals is October 4, 2013. On September 10, 2013, a
participant's informational meeting will be held for those on campus who are
interested in applying to be represented at Science City. For those off
campus, a webinar will be held later. Those interested in being represented
in Science City need to consider what science concept(s) underlie the
activities or programs you are presenting. Do not just come with random
activities, but be prepared to explain to members of the public the concepts
behind the science you are teaching. Those who make this clear in their
proposals will be more likely to be accepted. We would really like to have
great representation from Extension and the College in Science City, so
please consider submitting an application. This year, Science City will be
bigger and better than ever and will extend all the way to Campbell Avenue
on the east side of the mall. Please contact either Robert Casler
<mailto:rcasler at cals.arizona.edu> or Kirk Astroth
<mailto:kastroth at cals.arizona.edu> for more information.

NEW LISTING OF EXTENSION PUBLICATION REQUIRING REVIEW AND/OR REVISION:

As you are all aware, CALS Cooperative Extension requires that publications
be reviewed and, if necessary, updated every five years. However, there are
many cases where the original author no longer works for the UA or has no
interest in the subject matter. A list of publications has been put up on
our Extension Website (Employee - Web/Publication tab - Older Extension
Publications Needing Revision/Review
<https://extension.arizona.edu/sites/extension.arizona.edu/files/resourcefil
e/resource/mblock/old-pubs-needing-revison-or-review_0.xlsx> ). This list
contains the title and the original author. In some cases, the authors may
have updated the publication but never sent in the final copy. I urge
everyone to check and see if one of their publications is listed and contact
Ed Martin <mailto:edmartin at cals.arizona.edu> if you see a discrepancy.
Also, if you would like to revise/update one of these publications, email Ed
Martin <mailto:edmartin at cals.arizona.edu> and let him know of your
intentions. Ed will be able to keep track of who is working on which
publication and assure that we don't have two people working on the same
one.
