These business operations include: tracking all unit revenues and expenditures for all accounts, processing personnel actions, purchasing, travel, etc. Every unit has a need for timely, accurate, and thorough processing in all areas of business operations. Therefore, since good business operations are a fundamental part of unit management, this is ultimately the responsibility of the unit leader. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>A strong and efficient business office is also essential for CALS Cooperative Extension (CE) Administration. A business office in CALS CE needs to be able to effectively manage all administration and program accounts, maintain an accounting of all appropriated funding to CE, and, of course, address all of the aforementioned factors associated with any business office. Last year we made an attempt to consolidate the CALS CE business functions with CALS Administration. From the lessons learned from those experiences over the past year, we have decided to form a new consolidated business structure in CALS CE and assign a Business Manager, Senior position to direct it. <b><o:p></o:p></b></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>The person in this Business Manager, Senior position will begin the process of building this new business management structure in CALS CE. We have just hired Carolyne Greeno, formerly a part of the CALS Grants and Contracts unit in the Experiment Station Office, to fill this Business Manager, Senior position and we can now begin the process of building this new business management structure in CALS CE. Thanks to all who supported this year’s program to increase cultural understanding and connections with Japan. <span style='text-transform:uppercase'>A </span>special thanks to Kay Hongu, Rachel Turner (Kay's graduate student), Erin Gries, Sandra Saad, Tina Christiansen and Linda Block for their assistance and support. This year we focused on involvement in "Walk Across Arizona" as a family project and over 12,000 miles were logged by the participants. Many thanks, too, to our Extension agents who have prompted the program and helped us find great host families all around the state. The TFOB is the fourth largest book festival in the country and the largest non-profit festival of its kind. Science City continues to grow and we want to encourage all of you to consider being part of this huge public event to bring greater awareness to your programs and efforts. This year, Science City will be organized into 4 neighborhoods - 1) the Science of Everyday Living, 2) Science of the Natural World, 3) Science of Tomorrow, and 4) Science of You. An online application is available on the <a href="http://www.sciencecity.arizona.edu/">Science City website</a> for proposal submission. Deadline for proposals is October 4, 2013. On September 10, 2013, a participant's informational meeting will be held for those on campus who are interested in applying to be represented at Science City. For those off campus, a webinar will be held later. Those interested in being represented in Science City need to consider what science concept(s) underlie the activities or programs you are presenting. Do not just come with random activities, but be prepared to explain to members of the public the concepts behind the science you are teaching.
