Tuesday Morning Notes
November 20, 2012
FROM THE DIRECTOR:
All of the County Extension Directors (CEDs) from across the State convened
in Tucson on 13 and 14 November and participated in joint sessions with the
CALS Heads of Departments and Center Directors. UA President Ann Weaver Hart
joined us for an hour to outline her vision of a modern 21st Century
Land-Grant University and the role of Cooperative Extension in that model.
We also had a chance to discuss with President Hart how we can best work to
support her efforts to bring the $6.3M decision package proposal for CALS
Cooperative Extension that has been approved by the Arizona Board of Regents
and now needs to be approved and funded by the Governor and Arizona
Legislature. This proposal is intended to enhance our capacity to build new
programs that are in demand across the State and better enable CALS
Cooperative Extension to address the growing needs in Agriculture and
Natural Resources; 4-H Youth Development; and Family, Consumer, and Health
Sciences at all of our current sites of operation (departments, counties,
and centers) to positively impact the economic development of Arizona.
We are fortunate to have the opportunity to work with President Hart in this
manner. She truly understands the purpose and function of a Land-Grant
University and the valuable role that Cooperative Extension plays in
providing the critical connections between the university and people
throughout the state. Her support for this proposal is driven by this
understanding and her vision for a modern land-grant institution in the 21st
Century and the recognition that we have a solid foundation in CALS
Cooperative Extension today to build upon for the future. We had an
extremely interesting and enjoyable session with President Hart and she
clearly articulated that she is very sincere and committed to attaining
funding for this proposed decision package. This message was very well
received by all that were present and we assured President Hart that she can
count on CALS and all facets of Cooperative Extension to do everything
possible to help in this effort.
We still have a lot of work to do before we will be able to be successful in
this endeavor. As this advancement of the process for support and approval
of this decision package develops in the weeks ahead, I will be
communicating with our organization and the key personnel that will be
called upon to act and serve supportive roles to help obtain the funding
outlined in the decision package. In so doing, we will be working to
coordinate our efforts with the Extension Administration Team, CALS
Executive Council, and the President's office. Even though we have a long
way to go on this venture, I am very hopeful and extremely pleased to have a
chance to be able to pursue this opportunity.
FOCUS ON STAFF:
I'd like to welcome Kristin Wisneski who takes on the suite of
responsibilities to assist me that LoriAnne Barnett held. Many of you may
know Kristin since she worked with Barron Orr and Melanie Hingle on the
Stealth Health Project. She graduated from the U of A in May with a
master's degree. Kristin began work on November 12 and will have
responsibilities to assist me with the James 4-H Camp, the 4-H Centennial,
the 4-H International Exchange Program, and assistance with the VISTA and
AmeriCorps programs. We are very pleased to have been able to hire Kristin
to assist us in 4-H. Her phone number is the same as LoriAnne's
(520.626.2884).
DUST STORM APP NOW PUBLIC:
Extension's first app, Dust Storm, is now available through the Apple App
Store. Although they can be brief, dust storms can also be deadly! Every
year, drivers and their passengers die when caught in a dust storm because
they did not follow appropriate safety measures. The Dust Storm app
provides drivers with up-to-date weather alerts, tips and suggestions if
they find themselves caught in a dust storm or if one is approaching. This
app also provides up-to-date weather and air quality alerts. Features
include:
* Quick Safety Tips for coping with a dust storm
* Places to list emergency contact numbers, toll-free highway
information numbers, and insurance policy information
* Weather maps
* Access to alerts
* Items for a dust storm survival kit in your car
* Share this app with others
LAST CALL FOR FESTIVAL OF BOOKS PROPOSALS:
This is the very last chance for anyone in CALS who would like to showcase
their programs at the Tucson Festival of Books in March 2013. We have a
great presence within Science City and we are still interested in people who
can contribute to one of the many theme areas within the City:
* Science of Food Tent
* Technology & Engineering Tent
* Science of Sports Tent
* Natural World & Biodiversity Tent
* In the Lab and In the Field Tent
* Body & Health Tent
* Brain & Behavior Tent
* Space & Light Tent
* Science in Everyday Living Tent
To fill out the application, visit the Science City 2013 website

WEBSITE REDESIGN ASSISTANCE REQUESTED:
We are planning to update our state Extension website
<http://extension.arizona.edu/> to improve its appearance and function on
computers and mobile devices (e.g., smart phones, tablets). We would
appreciate your input on what changes you would like to see in the website
by responding to a few questions through Survey Monkey
<https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/92W76VT> . Please be specific and brief in
your recommendations, and complete the survey by December 3.
UPDATED DIRECTORY AVAILABLE:
A mid-November edition the downloadable Extension directory is now available
on our People Search web site (http://extension.arizona.edu/people-search).
Just click on the "Directory Download PDF" on the left side, then on the
File Resource, to open up a copy that you can save and print as needed. Or
use this direct link
<https://extension.arizona.edu/sites/extension.arizona.edu/files/resourcefil
e/resource/scrofts/20121119Roster.pdf> for an immediate download. As
always, please report any changes to Steven Crofts
<mailto:scrofts at cals.arizona.edu> (520.621.7145).
TECH TIP OF THE WEEK - SOPHOS AUTOUPDATE REVISITED:
Due to several computers in the counties still having issues with their
Sophos program, we are reprinting the article from two issues ago and
encouraging everyone to reread. It's very important that people affected by
the Sophos update problem get it fixed ASAP because the issue affects other
programs and may leave other software unable to update, leading to security
vulnerabilities.
"Back in mid-September, a bad Sophos update was distributed that disabled
the Sophos Autoupdater. This issue might also have affected other updating
software such as the Flash and Java updaters. To check if this is the case
with your computer, check to be sure the Sophos "shield" appears in the
System Tray (area where the date/time appears). If there is no Sophos
shield, the updater has been disabled. Call your departmental IT support
person (Extension offices, except Maricopa, should call Andy Medina -
520.626.8395, Maricopa County should call Cathy Munger - 602.827.8254), the
CALS Networking Lab (520.621.2489) or the University's 24/7 IT Support Desk
(520.626.8324) to have this issue resolved as soon as possible since it
leaves the antivirus without the updated virus signatures necessary to catch
the newer viruses."
