Tuesday Morning Notes

November 13, 2012

FROM THE DIRECTOR:

One of our strategic goals for CALS Cooperative Extension (CE) concerns the
implementation of "asymmetric balance" in the development, placement, and
use of personnel and expertise across the college and state. This is driven
by two basic points: 1) a limitation of financial resources and 2) an
asymmetric pattern of need or demand across the college and state. Thus,
the effective application of this approach is heavily dependent upon our
ability to make an effective assessment of real need and demand in all areas
of operation.

As we move through the review of our strategic plan it is important that
this is taken into consideration at the department, center, and county sites
of operation. Determining the level of need or demand needs to be coupled
with the capacity to develop programs that can be appropriately integrated
and delivered. Therefore, we need to recognize the potential partnerships
that can be forged with new programs, both within and beyond the college,
and the long-term capacity for the programs to be supported and sustained.
In addition, these programs must be productive, academically viable, and
demonstrate positive economic impact in terms of improved revenues, jobs,
and/or social value.

To state this very directly, it is important to recognize that we will not
be developing new positions or programs in the future simply based on
historical patterns. For example, if a position is vacated it will not
necessarily be replaced in that program area or site of operation
(department, county, or center). All programs and positions will be
considered on the basis of current and projected need at a critical level.

TECH TIP OF THE WEEK - SECUNIA SOFTWARE INSPECTORS:

A pair of free software update checkers comes from Secunia
<http://secunia.com/> : - the Online Software Inspector (OSI) and the
Personal Software Inspector (PSI).

*	Secunia Online Software Inspector
<http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online> (OSI) - a fast way to
scan your PC for the most common programs and vulnerabilities, thus checking
if your PC has a minimum security baseline against known patched
vulnerabilities. Use the Secunia OSI to get a feel for the Secunia Software
Inspector technology, then upgrade to the Secunia PSI, which covers
practically all programs on your PC, whereas the OSI checks less than 100
programs.
*	Secunia Personal Software Inspector
<http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal> (PSI) - a free
computer security solution that identifies vulnerabilities in non-Microsoft
(third-party) programs which can leave your PC open to attacks. Simply put,
it scans software on your system and identifies programs in need of security
updates to safeguard your PC against cybercriminals. It then supplies your
computer with the necessary software security updates to keep it safe. The
Secunia PSI even automates the updates for your insecure programs, making it
a lot easier for you to maintain a secure PC. Using a scanner like Secunia
PSI 3.0 is complementary to antivirus software.
