Tuesday Morning Notes

July 24, 2012

FROM THE DIRECTOR:

Consistent or static conditions commonly give people a sense of comfort.
Unfortunately, the world around us does not remain static or consistent but
it is extremely dynamic. The dynamic nature of conditions in CALS
Cooperative Extension is a reality and therefore, we face a constant need to
adapt or change in an appropriate response to the changing conditions.
Accordingly, I want to briefly describe three changes that are taking place
in the CALS Extension administration.

Finding consistent agreement across any large group of people, like in CALS
Extension, is not always easy. However, I have found over the past several
months that one thing everyone seems to agree on universally across CALS
Extension is the need to improve business relations with CALS Administrative
Services (CALS Admin). In an effort to address this need I have identified
two immediate objectives: 1) enhance the efficiency of the business services
provided to and from CALS Extension across the entire organization through
collaboration with CALS Admin Services, and 2) consolidate the Extension
Administration business operations with the two other Associate Dean's
offices in CALS (Instruction and Research) at present Extension is the only
Associate Dean's office operating separately.

The first step in the process of addressing these objectives is taking place
this week with the development of a new position in CALS Admin Services
within their new organizational structure that will provide the business
services directly to Extension Administration. This coincides with the
elimination of the separate business office in the Extension Administration
unit. Glenda Thompson, who has been serving quite admirably in the
Extension Administration business office, has accepted a new position with
CALS Admin and she begins her work with the team that will provide these
business services to Extension Administration on July 23. I realize this
represents a new way of doing business for Extension Administration. This
step is needed in an effort to address the two objectives I have outlined.
We are fortunate to have Glenda serving in this new capacity and I am
confident we can not only maintain our present level of business operations
but we will improve upon them in the future.

We also have some changes taking place with some County Extension Director
(CED) positions. Monica Pastor has done an excellent job serving as the
County Extension Director (CED) in Maricopa County for several years.
Monica has recently decided to take advantage of a new professional
opportunity that has become available and she will step down as the Maricopa
County CED the first of September. We are working through a two-step
process to identify a successor to Monica. The first step was to identify
an Interim CED and the second will involve a search and screen process to
secure a new CED for Maricopa County with the goal of having someone in
place the first of 2013. Dr. Ed Martin has agreed to serve as the interim
CED for Maricopa County and he will begin working with Monica and the
Maricopa County faculty and staff to initiate a transition over the weeks
ahead so as to provide good management and leadership to the programs in
Maricopa County.

Linda Masters retired as the La Paz County CED last Friday, July 20. She
has served that county and the Colorado River Indian Tribe in an outstanding
manner for several years, and similar to Monica in Maricopa County, we will
miss her leadership. Several options have been presented and are being
considered in relation to how to best address this CED vacancy. We are
fully committed to maintaining our Extension programs in La Paz County and
we are seeking to address the unique circumstances that are present in La
Paz County in a positive and effective manner.

Trent Teegerstrom recently accepted the role as the FRTEP (Federally
Recognized Tribes Extension Program) Director for Arizona and has now begun
working in this capacity. Trent has an excellent background that he brings
to this position along with his enthusiasm for the program and creative
ideas. We are very pleased to have Trent providing leadership for FRTEP in
CALS.

With each of these changes that I have described I want to thank everyone
across the CALS Extension organization for your cooperation.

TECH TIP OF THE WEEK - PDF FILLABLE FORMS AND THE ADOBE READER:

Ordinarily, Adobe Reader users can't save filled-in copies of forms that
they complete. However, you can extend rights to users of Reader 8 and
later versions so they can do so. In Acrobat Pro and Pro Extended, these
rights also include the ability to add comments, use the Typewriter tool,
and digitally sign the PDF. To do this:

*	Open a single PDF, or preview a component PDF in a PDF Portfolio.
*	If you are editing the form, click Close Form Editing in the
upper-right corner of the form.
*	Do one of the following: 1) Acrobat Pro and Pro Extended - choose
Advanced > Extend Features In Adobe Reader, 2) Acrobat Standard only -
choose Advanced > Extend Forms Fill-In & Save In Adobe Reader.

You should note that these extended privileges are limited to the current
PDF. When you create a different PDF form, you must perform this task again
to enable Reader users to save their own filled-in copies of that PDF.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Effective Communication: The Basis of Conflict Resolution is the second in a
three-part webinar series introducing a range of skills for managing and
resolving conflict. It will be presented by Amanda Murphy
<http://ruckelshauscenter.wsu.edu/about/documents/MurphyResume.2.27.12.pdf>
from the William D. Ruckelshaus Center
<http://ruckelshauscenter.wsu.edu/about/> on July 25 from 9:00-10:00a.m.
Pacific Time and will be located at the Washington State University Adobe
Connect site <http://breeze.wsu.edu/ext_skills/> . If you have any
questions, email Jim Lindstrom <mailto:jlindstr at wsu.edu> .

The session description is: When conflict arises, it signals the need for
communication and problem solving. To solve a problem effectively both
parties must first understand each other's viewpoint, assumptions, and
underlying needs. This requires good communication skills that enable an
exchange of information and convey interest in and respect for the other
party. Such skills include the effective use of body language, speech, and
listening, all of which are essential to managing and resolving conflict.
The session will introduce general communication styles, look at the role of
verbal and nonverbal communication in conflict, and present basic principles
and techniques of better communication.
