Unfortunately, the world around us does not remain static or consistent but it is extremely dynamic. The dynamic nature of conditions in CALS Cooperative Extension is a reality and therefore, we face a constant need to adapt or change in an appropriate response to the changing conditions. Accordingly, I want to briefly describe three changes that are taking place in the CALS Extension administration.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Finding consistent agreement across any large group of people, like in CALS Extension, is not always easy. However, I have found over the past several months that one thing everyone seems to agree on universally across CALS Extension is the need to improve business relations with CALS Administrative Services (CALS Admin). In an effort to address this need I have identified two immediate objectives: 1) enhance the efficiency of the business services provided to and from CALS Extension across the entire organization through collaboration with CALS Admin Services, and 2) consolidate the Extension Administration business operations with the two other Associate Dean’s offices in CALS (Instruction and Research) at present Extension is the only Associate Dean’s office operating separately. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>The first step in the process of addressing these objectives is taking place this week with the development of a new position in CALS Admin Services within their new organizational structure that will provide the business services directly to Extension Administration. This coincides with the elimination of the separate business office in the Extension Administration unit. <b>Glenda Thompson</b>, who has been serving quite admirably in the Extension Administration business office, has accepted a new position with CALS Admin and she begins her work with the team that will provide these business services to Extension Administration on July 23. I realize this represents a new way of doing business for Extension Administration. This step is needed in an effort to address the two objectives I have outlined. We are fortunate to have Glenda serving in this new capacity and I am confident we can not only maintain our present level of business operations but we will improve upon them in the future.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>We also have some changes taking place with some County Extension Director (CED) positions. <b>Monica Pastor</b> has done an excellent job serving as the County Extension Director (CED) in Maricopa County for several years. Monica has recently decided to take advantage of a new professional opportunity that has become available and she will step down as the Maricopa County CED the first of September. We are working through a two-step process to identify a successor to Monica. The first step was to identify an Interim CED and the second will involve a search and screen process to secure a new CED for Maricopa County with the goal of having someone in place the first of 2013. <b>Dr. Ed Martin</b> has agreed to serve as the interim CED for Maricopa County and he will begin working with Monica and the Maricopa County faculty and staff to initiate a transition over the weeks ahead so as to provide good management and leadership to the programs in Maricopa County.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Linda Masters</span></b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'> retired as the La Paz County CED last Friday, July 20. She has served that county and the Colorado River Indian Tribe in an outstanding manner for several years, and similar to Monica in Maricopa County, we will miss her leadership. Several options have been presented and are being considered in relation to how to best address this CED vacancy. We are fully committed to maintaining our Extension programs in La Paz County and we are seeking to address the unique circumstances that are present in La Paz County in a positive and effective manner.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Trent Teegerstrom</span></b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'> recently accepted the role as the FRTEP (Federally Recognized Tribes Extension Program) Director for Arizona and has now begun working in this capacity. Trent has an excellent background that he brings to this position along with his enthusiasm for the program and creative ideas. Members of the LABO Youth group in Japan, these youth are here to experience American family life, culture and society. They range in age from 12-15. Many will participate in 4-H activities along with their host siblings. Our thanks to everyone who helps to promote this program and keep it going…and a special thanks to the volunteers who helped organize this international exchange program -- Tina Christianson, LoriAnne Barnett, Kay Hongu, Erin Gries, Eric Larsen and Ozlem Kacira. More than 40 people attended and Dean Shane Burgess provided opening remarks. Dean Burgess also paid special tribute to Ron & Laura James who provided a significant pledge to support the camp and name it in honor of their Uncle Harold & Aunt Mitzie James who operated the Deep Well Ranch in the Prescott area since the 1950's. Additional honors went to: 1) Henry & Linda Dahlberg who donated a large portion of the camp to Arizona 4-H - the road into camp was named Dahlberg Lane in their honor; 2) Denise Warmkowski, Vice President of Southwest Farm Credit Services accepted recognition on behalf of her organization that contributed to the Rec Center at Camp; and the Lemke Family of Yuma for their donations to support the camp - the pond was renamed "Lemke Lake" in memory of Bud Lemke who passed away earlier this year and who was a strong supporter of 4-H and camps. During the Open House, Yuma and Maricopa County 4-H members provided lunch and presented a short program for donors at the campfire circle. Kyia Lively of Maricopa County used American Sign Language with a song for all those assembled. Doug Wright, President of the Arizona 4-H Youth Foundation, presented a check for $50,000 as the first of their contributions to support the camp.
