Tuesday Morning Notes

January 31, 2012

FOCUS ON FACULTY:

Congratulations to Brent Strickland, associate agent, who was interested in
moving to Yavapai County to give leadership to the 4-H program there. As of
January 9th, Brent has been settling in to his new county (vs. La Paz
County). Thanks, Brent, for looking at this opportunity. Brent will also
have some responsibilities to assist with the new 4-H camp at Mingus
Springs. Welcome!

Matt Livingston was recently honored for 20 years of service to the Hopi
Nation. Matt provides leadership for both agricultural and youth programs
on the Hopi reservation. Check out the wonderful article and photo

ARIZONA SCITECH FESTIVAL:

UACE will be hosting events for every county during the Arizona SciTech
Festival which will showcase Arizona as a national leader in science,
technology and innovation through a series of events taking place during the
month of February 2012. The festival is a grass roots collaboration of over
200 organizations in industry, academia, arts, community and K-12, geared to
excite and inform Arizonans ages 3-103 about how science, technology and
innovation will drive our state for the next 100 years. For more
information on Extension events happening around the state, visit the
Arizona SciTech Festival website

ARIZONA 4-H HAS A HUMVEE:

Arizona Game & Fish recently returned to us a military grade HumVee that 4-H
shooting sports of Maricopa County acquired years ago through surplus
Federal property. Plans for the vehicle are still up in the air, but one
possibility is using it at the Arizona 4-H Camp at Mingus Springs. If you
want to take a peek at it, you can see it at the Maricopa County Extension
Office. Or better yet, here is a photo.

TECH TIP OF THE WEEK - SHORT URL DECODERS:

Ever wonder where that "shortened" url (link) goes to? While a url
shortening service (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/URL_shortening) is helpful
in trimming long urls, there is no way to tell from looking at the short url
where the link actually goes. This fact is used by e-criminals to direct
traffic to nefarious websites. Security professionals suggest that users
should always preview a short URL before accessing it. There are several
"decoding" websites that will decode the shortened url and several will
*preview* the short url target webpage. Check out the webpage article,
<http://www.aboutonlinetips.com/decode-tiny-url-to-identify-real-web-address
/> "8 Ways to Identify Real Web Address Before Clicking any Short or Tiny
URL" that discusses the pros and cons of using short urls and lists a few
decoding and previewing services.

DIRECTOR'S BOOKSHELF:

One of our colleagues suggested recently that I might want to occasionally
share some of the reading resources that I find useful in my work. So, in
that spirit, here is my first recommendation:

The World is Flat: A Brief History of the 21st Century, by Thomas L.
Friedman. Originally published in 2007, this compelling book describes how
rapidly the world is changing because of technology and the global digital
revolution. Friedman presents a variety of examples from his travels around
the world to illustrate how the world has been flattened by the equal access
to technology and knowledge. He hammers home the point that if you are an
American, you better be into providing personalized, passionate service
because everything else will be digitized, virtualized or miniaturized and
can be done by someone else cheaper and faster. This book will really open
your eyes about what is in store for the future.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

WRRC Chocolatefest - Friday February 10. If you like water and you like
chocolate, you have an opportunity to sample delicious desserts from local
kitchens and fine chocolate from around the world while discussing the water
issues of the day. Bring your favorite chocolate delicacies to share. The
meeting will take place at the Water Resources Research Center, Sol Resnick
Conference Room, 350 N. Campbell Avenue, from 3:30-5:00pm. Parking is
available.
