Tuesday Morning Notes
February 21, 2012

FROM THE NEW DIRECTOR:

I am writing to offer my greetings to CALS and the entire Extension community as I embark upon my new duties as the Associate Dean and Director for Economic Development and Extension. My first objectives are to begin observing and listening in an effort to learn and absorb the full scope of Extension programs and operations in Arizona. As I work through the transition from my duties as the Head of the Soil, Water and Environmental Science (SWES) Department (which I will maintain through the rest of this calendar year), I am also simultaneously assuming the Associate Dean and Director role at the same time. I look forward to working with everyone in this very broad organization and I appreciate your cooperation as we all work through this transition process together.

FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:

 * As her year as a VISTA comes to a close, we would like to thank Molly DeCleene for her assistance with the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension's social media efforts (her last day is 2/27). As we look back on the year we also thank all of you who have supported this work. Whether you have taken a feedback survey, attended an Elluminate training session, or even pioneered a social media channel at your local level; thank you! If you haven't already, check out the UACE Facebook page<http://www.facebook.com/ArizonaCooperativeExtension> and other channels of social media throughout extension<http://extension.arizona.edu/social-media> and get involved with posting comments or events within your expertise.
 * The Maricopa County Cooperative Extension office invites you to join the University of Arizona team for the Pat Tillman run<http://patsrun.com/> on April 21 at 7:05am. This team is open to any UA faculty, staff, student or Alumni. It would be great to have a sea of red & blue cross the finish line on ASU's football field. This is a great Foundation in which service members are eligible for college scholarships. There are four Tillman Military Scholars at UA this year. Wear your UofA colors or logo shirts that day. You can register at the 8th Annual Pat's Run website<https://cui.active.com/event-reg/select-race?e=1615902&mailingId=&recipientId=&style=active>. Use the team name, Team Wildcats, and password, UAWildcats, when you register. You do not need to be a runner to participate, but can be a walker for the entire 4.2 mile race. Go Cats!

4-H NEWS:

 * 2011 Enrollment Data Shows Increase - The Arizona 4-H enrollment data for the 2010-2011 year has been compiled and the results show another overall increase. Arizona 4-H youth development programs touch the lives of 15% of Arizona's children and youth between the ages of 5 and 19 - more than 1 in 10. Total 4-H enrollment in 2011 was nearly 185,000 - an increase of 41,000 participants from the previous year. Thanks and credit go to all the 4-H faculty, program coordinators, and staff who work so hard to extend the resources of 4-H to youth in a wide variety of settings.
 * Host Families Needed for Summer Japanese Exchange - Since 1972, the 4-H pledge has included the phrase "and my world" - to recognize and celebrate our international connections and interdependence. Arizona 4-H offers a number of opportunities for 4-H members and families to experience the richness of the world, even without leaving home. Each summer, we need 10 host families for 10 Japanese 4-H/LABO youth ages 12-16 who come to Arizona for one month - July 21- August 19. These eager Japanese youth want to experience American culture and learn English better by staying with your family. They need a host sibling of the same approximate age. Please promote this in your county with families with children between the ages of 12-16. Applications for hosting a Japanese delegate may be completed on-line by setting up and account at the States' 4-H International Exchange Programs website<http://www.states4hexchange.org/host-families/> or you may fill out and print a form found at the Inbound Japanese Exchange Program website<http://extension.arizona.edu/4h/state/inbound-japanese-exchange-program> and submit it to the Arizona 4-H office: University of Arizona, Cooperative Extension, Forbes 301, Tucson, AZ 85721, attn: Kirk Astroth. Hosting opportunities are limited, so get applications in as soon as possible - preferably before April 2.

TECH TIP OF THE WEEK - INSTALLING A NEW MOUSE OR KEYBOARD:

Before installing a new mouse or keyboard, uninstall the old mouse or keyboard software, if any was installed. Normally the built-in Windows mouse and keyboard drivers are all that is needed, even for the wireless types. Software would be needed to access or reconfigure any special features of a mouse (a 5 or 7 button mouse) or a keyboard (multi-media keyboard). Some of the more popular software is Logitech's Setpoint, Logitech's MouseWare, Microsoft's IntelliType (keyboard) or IntelliPoint (mouse), and Kensington's MouseWorks. For example, if there is no Kensington mouse attached to the computer, then Kensington MouseWorks should not be installed. For laptops, the touchpad software needs to be installed if the special features (scroll areas, tap zones, etc.) of the touchpad are to be used.
