Tuesday Morning Notes

April 10, 2012

FROM THE DIRECTOR:

As you may have noted in a prior week's TMN, Kirk's title and duties have
changed slightly from his previous responsibilities. Kirk will continue to
provide administrative and programmatic leadership for 4-H youth development
programs, but in addition he will be providing system-wide leadership in the
administration of the human science programs in Extension and providing
leadership in the development and implementation of various distance
education and social media projects and objectives that are initiated by the
Extension Administrative Team. These new duties build upon Kirk's expertise
in the social sciences, his efforts to develop VISTA and AmeriCorps programs
for all units of Extension, his innovative efforts in social media and
applications of educational technology. Through his new roles, Extension's
human science programs will have an elevated voice in administrative
deliberations and strategic directions. Linda Houtkooper will continue to
provide programmatic leadership for Family, Consumer and Health Sciences
programming as she has in the past. Kirk's new duties do not detract from
Linda's role or the important work that Linda has brought to her position.
Kirk's role will be to work with Linda and others on campus to help bridge
youth, family, and community programs and integrate our programming efforts.
As the Extension Administrative Team identifies new distance education
projects, Kirk will serve as the point person to lead these initiatives on
our behalf.

I very much appreciate Kirk's willingness to expand his range of
responsibilities. We need this amplification of the human science
perspective in administrative and strategic deliberations in CALS and Kirk
is well-suited to assist in this manner.

COUNTY OFFICE COMPUTER SUPPORT:

This is an annual reminder for our county office locations that support
continues to be available through either our remote access system or from
on-site visits by Andy Medina. Many of you have already benefited from
these services, but we wanted to make note of this again. As budget cuts
continue, we also continue to have no travel budget available for Andy.
However, on-site visits can still be requested through my office but all
travel costs must be paid for by the requesting county. Andy's time will
continue to be covered by this office. To manage the on-site support
requests, email your request to me with a cc to Andy Medina and Steven
Crofts.

Also, don't forget that when county offices order new computers (desktop or
laptop), please work with and send questions to Andy
<mailto:gamedina at cals.arizona.edu> (520.626.8395) -- or Robert Armstrong
<mailto:armstrng at cals.arizona.edu> (520.621.3872) as back up. This way, we
can be sure you are getting the right technology for your location and that
we are able to support it (whether by remote access or in person).

TECH TIP OF THE WEEK:

Google's "Search by Image" feature is both useful and fun. It can be used
to do a search based on an image, or to find other, similar images. To do
this, first go to the Google images search web site
<http://images.google.com/> . Then, you can use one of four methods to
provide an image for searching:

*	Drag and drop an image into the search box
*	Upload an image by clicking the camera icon in the search box
*	Copy and paste the URL of an image
*	Install the Firefox or Chrome browser plugins, then right-click an
image on the Web

For more information, see the Google
<http://www.google.com/insidesearch/features/images/searchbyimage.html>
"Search By Image" web site.
