Tuesday Morning Notes
November 1, 2011
FOCUS ON FACULTY:
Congratulations to Jan Norquest for receiving both the Meritorious and the
25 Years of Service Award and Amy Parrott for receiving the Distinguished
Service Award at last week's 4-H agent annual national meeting in Omaha,
Nebraska. Arizona was well represented by 14 youth development
professionals. The meeting included dynamic speakers like Former Nebraska
Cornhuskers Coach and US Representative Tom Osborne, as well as seminars on
wheels touring local farms and homegrown businesses and hands on workshops
presented by our peers.
At the 2011 National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences
conference held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Evelyn Whitmer was honored for
receiving a National Distinguished Service Award and Linda Block for
receiving a National Continued Excellence Award. Congratulations to both of
these faculty members for these awards from their national peers. Linda
retired in June and attended the conference to personally accept her award.
FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:
Congratulations to the "Supplemental Nutrition Assistance - Education
Program Team" (SNAP-Ed) for receiving the 2011 CALS Team Award. Scottie
Misner, a Cooperative Extension Specialist in the Nutritional Sciences
Department, provides the leadership for this unique, diverse, and effective
team. The mission of this team is to shape food consumption in a positive
way, promote health, and reduce the incidence of disease for people with
limited financial resources. There are currently 11 SNAP-Ed program units
located in 8 counties in Arizona. In FY10, a total of 98,924 people
participated in direct education contacts provided by the SNAP-Ed program.
This SNAP-Ed Team has worked successfully, in partnership with the Arizona
Department of Health Services, for over ten years to build an effective,
diverse education team that includes CALS faculty and staff based on the
main campus and in Cooperative Extension offices throughout the state. They
are an exemplary model of engagement with people to help improve lives and
communities. The resiliency and adaptability of this team have enabled them
to successfully launch, develop and sustain this excellent outreach
education program.
COLLEGIATE AND CAMPUS SHOWCASE:
This Friday, November 4, Sheila Merrigan will be presenting at the 2nd
Annual Collegiate and Campus Showcase
<http://uahomecoming.com/ccs_2.php#cals> on behalf of the College of
Agriculture and Life Sciences. She will be discussing Cooperative
Extension's use of social media. Support Sheila and her presence at the
showcase by 1) attending the presentation, 2) "liking" University of Arizona
Cooperative Extension on Facebook

TECH TIP OF THE WEEK:
CCleaner is another program for cleaning out junk files and can be
downloaded from Piriform web site
<http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard> . As noted on the
site, "CCleaner is our system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It
removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and
freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online
activities such as your Internet history. Additionally, it contains a fully
featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it's fast (normally
taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware!"
CCleaner should be run once a week to keep junk files at a minimum. It is
more thorough than the built-in Windows Disk Cleanup since it cleans items
that Disk Cleanup does not. If you have questions about using this software
(such as altering default settings), contact Andy Medina
<mailto:gamedina at cals.arizona.edu> (520.626.8395).
HEALTHY FOOD FACEBOOK CONTEST:
Join us on Facebook <http://www.facebook.com/ArizonaCooperativeExtension>
for the Healthy Food Contest! Taking place over the month of November, this
contest will feature pictures of healthy food options as well as health
facts about each. Upload a picture of a healthy food today, let us know
what makes it healthy, and enter to win the Living Well
