Politico (1/15, Mintz, 4.04M) Morning Transportation rundown reports Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao announced a new rule at the Transportation Research Board’s annual meeting that would allow small drones to operate at night and fly over people.

Aviation International News (1/15, Huber) reports the announcement included an FAA draft notice of proposed rulemaking allowing for drone flights at night and over people without a waiver, an FAA-proposed Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking involving
“drone safety and security issues including the possibility of instituting mandatory standoff distances between persons and buildings for drone operations,” and the announcement of new contracts connected to Unmanned Traffic Management research. AIN reports
the FAA said it has received 4,837 requests to operate drone flights at night, making it the most commonly requested waiver.
