Good morning Kristina,
My name is Ben Kalt and I am a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Dept of State, working at the US Consulate in Ciudad Juarez.
A UTEP professor has led collaboration across the city of El Paso to stand up a low altitude sensing program, primarily to detect drones that fly below 400 feet, a bit more below.
We are interested in supporting the expansion of the LASP program to other sectors of the border, and will be in touch with Tucson Sector Border Patrol, TPD, and Tucson Intl Airport authorities as well, but would very much like to have an academic partner.
Are you aware of any U of A professors doing work on counter-drones? If anyone you're aware of doing any similar work, would very much appreciate the connection.
Many thanks regardless!
Ben
UTEP Low Altitude Sensing Program (LASP)
(SBU) Since 2018, when UTEP LASP (LASP) became the country’s first county-wide (LASP covers all of El Paso County) operational low-altitude (defined as 400 feet and below, where FAA air traffic management services are not provided) UAS Traffic Management (UTM) system, Consulate Ciudad Juarez RSO has been part of LASP. LASP consists of 96 sensors at 29 secure sites across El Paso, with support from UTEP and a range of local, state, and federal partners to monitor, collect, and analyze drone data, including to protect Chief of Mission personnel at the Consulate and to support El Paso law enforcement, public safety and public services.
