Hello,

Keith from UA's Export Control program sent me an interesting video produced by University of Maryland - College Park.

You can probably skip to about 3:30 minutes in... where the speaker lumps UAS-based research purposes with commercial purposes, and therefore, discards hobbyist exemption.

I might be on the wrong side of this interpretation, but my response is below.

Interesting, from our talks with the FAA, individuals (including researchers) who are not using UAS for "UAS research" (e.g. aerospace engineering) but for research relating to their domain (e.g. crop phenotyping) can be considered a UAS hobbyist, as long as the data gained from the UAS flight mission is not sold, licensed, or distributed for fee (or in our case, used in high value video production).

Non-research usage (e.g University business), I would interpret, would fall under the public entity space. I'll pass along, thanks for sharing!
