<p><strong>Sustainable Food Production, Conservation, and Agriculture in the</strong><br>
<strong>Southwest</strong><br>
<strong>RNR496B, Section 002 – Natural Resources Seminar</strong><br>

<strong>1 Unit</strong><br>
<strong>Agriculture, and especially ranching, is central to our understanding of the history and</strong><br>
<strong>environment of the western United States. In popular culture, western agriculture has as</strong><br>
<strong>complex reputation – a part of our pioneer heritage and a symbol of environmental harm due</strong><br>
<strong>issues such as overgrazing and water use. In this class will consider whether agriculture and</strong><br>
<strong>ranching can be sustainably practiced in the Southwest. What is the relationship between</strong><br>
<strong>agriculture, conservation, and sustainable land use? Can we continue to produce local food and</strong><br>
<strong>sustain our environment in the arid southwest?</strong><br>
<strong>The class is discussion based and will feature guest speakers from the community and field trips</strong><br>
<strong>to learn about the relationship between conservation and agriculture in the real world.</strong><br>
<strong>Students from all departments are welcome!</strong><br>
