Subject: Greetings from Las Cruces! and Inquiry about Phenology-based REU at the Jornada Summer 2016

Greetings everyone!

I hope you are enjoying life in Tucson (and Tempe) as much as I am in Las Cruces. Going through the SNRE website to retrieve your contact information was a little nostalgic for me. I truly treasure my time in SNR. I welcome the opportunity
to reconnect with you and I trust things are going well in SNRE. I am writing today to ask if you might know of good candidates for an REU opportunity at the Jornada this summer. The project on which I would mentor a student involves working with historic
photographs from a phenology study established by John Ludwig and others in the mid-1980s and repeating those photographs to expand the record as well as derive phenology-indicators from the data set. It’s part detective work, part field work, and part photo
processing – all fun.

My interactions with undergraduate students are few, so I thought I would reach out to you to ask if you might know of good students that would welcome an opportunity for a research experience this summer at the Jornada and be interested
in working with me on this project. I’ve attached information about the program (in general). If you have a candidate (or two), please let me know. I’m happy to then forward the details to you and them. It’s great pay for a student and has tremendous potential
for insightful outcomes.

I hope you are having a great week.
