WHAT: A meeting to discuss how to integrate basic pollination ecology with
ongoing research and restoration efforts.
WHEN: 1:30 - 4:30 pm, Tuesday April 9, 2013
WHERE: SRER Headquarters, Florida Canyon (see attached directions)
WHY: With changing climate conditions, pollination interactions are likely
being disrupted and the resulting impact can have a cascading effect on
community level processes. There are a number of research and restoration
projects that are beginning and/or are active in southeastern Arizona
relating to this topic. Our goal is to identify areas of mutual interest
that will benefit our different projects and help build collaborations by
having a broad discussion about basic pollination ecology and about how to
detect the disruption of the pollination mutualism, what restoration actions
might mitigate these disruptions, and how to assess the success of
restoration efforts focused on conserving pollination interactions.

Presentations:
Introduction: Susan Wethington (5 min)
Nectar, the currency of animal-pollination: what do we know?
Claudia Rodriquez (UNAM) (15 min)
Project Descriptions (Representatives of different projects, 5 mins
per project) 20-25 minutes

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

1) How can we evaluate whether pollination as a function has been disrupted?
2) How does partial disruption affect plant and community function?
3) What factors influence the vulnerability of various community components
to pollination disruption?
3) How can pollination function be restored to a given focal community?
4) How can we best assess the success of pollination restoration/pollination
conservation?
