<span>March 13, 2013 - Frank Rose “The Trees of the Catalina Mountains”</span><br>
<span>Frank will take us on a journey through three main elevations of the</span><br>
<span>Catalina mountains, showing the trees between 4 and 5 thousand feet, 6</span><br>
<span>and 7 thousand feet, and 8 thousand feet and above. Many trees can be</span><br>
<span>identified by just one feature (fruit, for example). He will show some</span><br>
<span>distinguishing features for the species in this mountain range. Copies</span><br>
<span>of the new book: "Mountain Trees of Southern Arizona" will be</span><br>
<span>available, and Frank will be happy to autograph them.</span><br>

<span>April 10, 2013 – Stephen Buchmann: "Desert Bee Diversity: Husbandry</span><br>
<span>and Conservation Concerns"</span><br>

<span>Dr. Steve Buchmann will introduce us to the amazing diversity, 1300</span><br>
<span>species within Arizona, and give vignettes of their biology and</span><br>
<span>behavior of a few of his favorite bees. He will also present</span><br>
<span>information on how to make "bee condos" to attract and house leaf</span><br>
<span>cutter and mason bees, along with why we should conserve standing dead</span><br>
<span>trees and dead limbs. Information will be presented on the plight of</span><br>
<span>threatened bees, including many native bumble bees. He will finish his</span><br>
<span>presentation with details of buzz pollination (bees turn themselves</span><br>
<span>into living tuning forks) on native Arizona plants including Solanum</span><br>
<span>and Amoreuxia.</span><br>

<span>PLANT ATLAS PROJECT OF AZ is starting in Southern AZ!</span><br>

<span>Being a Scientist: Training for the Plant Atlas Project of Arizona</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>If you have ever longed to contribute to a meaningful cause without</span><br>
<span>the usual routine of writing a check or joining a phone bank to ask</span><br>
<span>someone else for a check, then you are in luck. Stay tuned for August</span><br>
<span>2013, when Arizona Native Plant Society’s own Doug Ripley will lead</span><br>
<span>training sessions for people who want to contribute to the science of</span><br>
<span>botany. There is still a need for good, old-fashioned field work in</span><br>
<span>botany, and that means creating floras for under-studied areas in</span><br>
<span>Arizona. This training is for people who will work on Plant Atlas</span><br>
<span>Project of Arizona (PAPAZ) flora. The training will consist of one</span><br>
<span>Saturday of lecture and lab in the University of Arizona Herbarium,</span><br>
<span>followed on Sunday by a group field trip to collect plants in an</span><br>
<span>existing PAPAZ area. Participants will be asked to learn to collect,</span><br>
<span>identify, press, dry, and properly label plant specimens for PAPAZ.</span><br>

<span>Sonoran Desert Weedwackers in Tucson Mountain Park</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>The Sonoran Desert Weedwackers are an outgrowth of the Tucson Chapter,</span><br>
<span>and a force to be reckoned with! They have regular work days the third</span><br>
<span>Saturday of every month. Pima County staff provide digging bars and</span><br>
<span>gloves; the group is transported to the worksite by a Pima County van.</span><br>
<span>Volunteers learn the difference between native and invasive grasses</span><br>
<span>onsite. Experienced Weedwackers demonstrate the proper digging</span><br>
<span>techniques in the field.</span><br>

<span>NEVADA NATIVE PLANT SOCIETY Margaret Williams Research Grants for</span><br>
<span>Botanical Research</span><br>
<span>The Nevada Native Plant Society (NNPS) Margaret Williams research</span><br>
<span>grants program will annually award up to two grants of not over $1000</span><br>
<span>each.</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>These grants are designed to facilitate basic botanical research and</span><br>
<span>increase our understanding of Nevada's native and naturalized flora.</span><br>
<span>The research should cover some aspect of our flora from single species</span><br>
<span>to whole communities or ecosystems. Research can include, but is not</span><br>
<span>limited to, disciplines such as conservation, landscape analysis,</span><br>
<span>ecology, biogeography, or taxonomy.</span><br>

<span>CRITERIA AND PROCEDURES</span><br>
<span>Written proposals are to be submitted to the Small Grants Program</span><br>
<span>chairman. Research proposals should be concise and to the point!! Each</span><br>
<span>proposal should contain a title, objectives, methods, expected final</span><br>
<span>product, a brief statement of applicant's qualifications, and a</span><br>
<span>project budget for how NNPS funds will be spent. If applicant is a</span><br>
<span>student an accompanying letter from their advisor is required (maximum</span><br>
<span>of one page). Inclusion of an e-mail address will facilitate</span><br>
<span>notification. Deadline is 1 February 2013.</span><br>
<span>Costs covered by these grants include travel, lodging, meals, services</span><br>
<span>such as computer time, graphics, phone, copying, and film and</span><br>
<span>processing. Non-eligible costs include equipment, wages, typing, and</span><br>
<span>costs unrelated to the project.</span><br>

<span>A decision will be reached by 1 March 2013. All applicants will be</span><br>
<span>notified of the committee's decision. The committee may decide not to</span><br>
<span>fund a grant in any given year.</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>Successful applicants will be required to discuss their research</span><br>
<span>results with NNPS. This can be through an article for our newsletter</span><br>
<span>or by giving a presentation at an evening NNPS meeting.</span><br>
<span>Support in the form of a NNPS Margaret Williams Grant will be awarded</span><br>
<span>only once for any one project.</span><br>
