Hi there,
My name is Gerry, I'm a former member of Tierra Seca, working for the AZ
Game and Fish Department and an organization called Quail Forever. Without
getting too into the weeds about my role here, basically, I work with a
local chapter of QF called the Southern Arizona Quail Forever chapter who
does work events that typically involve building small one-rock dams around
the desert to help manage erosion. It's a very straight-forward project,
easy to learn, and can be really beneficial to the landscape.
Anyway, they are holding a volunteer day on Saturday to go build some of
these structures out by Sierra Vista. It would be a good opportunity to
learn how to build them (if you haven't already) and could help a local
group of conservation enthusiasts with some extra hands. I know it's last
minute, but figured I would reach out to see if anyone might be interested.
I'll include the event information below. There are plenty of people who
signed up for Friday, but they may have to cancel on Saturday if they don't
get more volunteers.
Feel free to share this with any other groups who might be interested. Also
you can call me any time over the next few days if you want to get some
more info. I'm happy to help, if I can. I'll be at the event on Friday.
Thank you!
Cheers,
Gerry
Earth Day was started in 1970, after a devastating oil spill in America
brought environmental issues to the forefront of public consciousness —
SAQF will improve our habitat by reducing erosion in the Coronado National
Forest.
Dates: Friday, April 21 and Saturday, April 22
Times: 9 AM-1PM
Help needed either or both days. Even an hour of work will be appreciated.
The worksite is in prime Mearns’ quail habitat. The elevation is 5400 feet
so it will be cooler than our urban areas. Highs are forecast in the 70s.
Location: * Hwy 92, S of Sierra Vista
*Just pass MM 334, turn right at Coronado National Memorial sign
* Go past Visitor Center [ is worth time to stop ], up mountain
past Montezuma Pass LookOut [ views are amazing ] and start down the
mountain
* Turn left at Copper Creek Road [first turn available] follow to
work sight which is left at fork.
The work will involve building rock dams - it is not as hard as it
sounds. It is a bit of a drive from the Tucson area but you will see some
beautiful scenery and improve wildlife habitat. Please call Zack May
520-301-8135 or Jim Littlejohn 520-490-1374 with questions or help with
directions. Zack will be there Friday and Jim on Saturday.
Restoration Work: The project you will be assisting is funded jointly by
the National Forest Foundation, AZSFWC and SAQF to improve the quail and
other wildlife habitat. The Watershed Crew for Borderlands Restoration will
show you how to build rock structures to slow water flow, increase
infiltration, trap sediment and establish vegetation —this process
mitigates on-site erosion. We get credit for our in kind labor donation for
matching funds.
What to bring:
- Plenty of water
- Close-toed shoes
- Long pants
- Sun protection: wide brimmed hat, long-sleeved shirt, and sunscreen
- Work gloves - we will have some if you do not
- Snacks and/or packed lunch
