Subject: Botanist position - rare plant surveys and monitoring on the Tonto NF!

Spread the word! The Desert Botanical Garden (DBG) and the Tonto NF will soon be advertising and hiring a botanist to survey and monitor rare and vulnerable plant species on the Tonto National Forest. This will be a full time position (average 40 hours a week) for 7 months (March 2022 through September 2022).

The botanist will work independently to accomplish rare plant surveys and monitoring at priority areas on Tonto National Forest (identified by Forest Service and DBG botanists). The botanist will also support the existing Tonto and DBG citizen science rare plant survey and monitoring program by participating in the annual training for volunteers (in-person or online training at the beginning of March) and participate in volunteer survey events/days. This position will be 80 percent fieldwork with occasional office work (for example, participation in annual community science rare plant training, downloading field data, meetings with Forest Service and DBG staff). Fieldwork may be moderately strenuous in nature, including long hours in the field (10-12 hour days), exposure to high temperatures during the summer, and difficult hiking terrain. Occasional over-night camping in wilderness areas may be required depending on travel distance and required survey intensity at priority areas. Desired skillsets include:

  * M.S. or B.S. degree in plant biology or related field, preferred.
  * At least two years of relevant experience, either through formal education and or applied work, in knowledge of the Arizona flora, ability to identify plant species, and surveying and monitoring rare plant species.
  * Excellent organizational skills, effective communication, and ability to work both independently and in small team settings.
  * Technical proficiencies in data collection methods, including using digital tablets or other electronic devices, making any necessary updates to datasheets in Microsoft Word, Excel, or other software, maintaining accurate records with minimal data entry errors, and ability to work with geographic data to create maps. Experience with GIS, preferred.

For more information, or anyone interested in applying for the position please contact me directly.

Thanks!
