Adapting Management of Spring Ecosystems During Drought
Date: Thursday, July 22nd, 2021
Time: 12:00 PM Pacific/1:00 PM Mountain/2:00 PM Central/3:00 PM Eastern
Presenter: Louise Misztal, Sky Island Alliance
July 22nd Webinar:
The Sky Island region of southeastern Arizona and northern Mexico is a world-renowned biodiversity hotspot where the Chihuahuan and Sonoran Deserts meet the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Madre. This arid landscape is home to thousands of springs that sustain a vast diversity of life that are threatened by the warming, drying climate and prolonged exceptional drought in the region. During this webinar, Louise will discuss what Sky Island Alliance is learning about spring ecosystems from surveys and monitoring, management tools they have developed to support stewardship of springs, and responses practitioners can take to protect and restore springs to ensure they sustain a diversity of life.

About the Speaker:
Louise Misztal is the Executive Director at Sky Island Alliance, a conservation organization working to protect and restore the diversity of life and lands in the Sky Island region of the U.S. and Mexico. She has worked at Sky Island Alliance for the past 15 years leading climate change adaptation initiatives to support natural resource managers in understanding impacts on ecosystems and wildlife, crafting collaborative approaches to responding, and developing projects to study and steward spring resources. She holds Bachelor's degrees in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and Microbiology and an M.S. in Geographic Information Systems.
