The USGS Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center, in cooperation with the Northwest Climate Adaptation Science Center, seeks a Supervisory Research Ecologist (Rangelands, GS-12/13) to lead the planning and execution of applied ecological investigations important to Department of the Interior and other resource managers in rangelands of the western United States. Specific responsibilities and desired skills may include but are not limited to:
-Work closely with land managers, particularly the BLM, and scientists from rangeland and other disciplines, to foster co-production of actionable science and adapt to evolving science needs.
-Build a research program that aims to quantify and predict how multiple stressors (e.g., climate change, wildfire, disturbance from large herbivores such as cattle and feral equids, ecological drought) and land management practices cumulatively drive resilience or transition among different rangeland ecosystem states at management-relevant scales.
-Develop spatially implicit and explicit models that describe suites of interacting ecosystem processes associated with rangeland states, including above-ground productivity, composition, and structure and below-ground carbon dynamics.
-Evaluate interactions and consequences of climate scenarios, alternative grazing, and/or other land-use practices on carbon sequestration, storage, and emission management.
-Possess a demonstrated background in applied ecosystem ecology, proficiency with modern statistical analyses and predictive modeling, record of peer-reviewed publication, and collaborative research.
The position is open to all qualified applicants under 2 announcements: with one vacancy in either Boise, ID or Corvallis, OR. USGS is committed to fostering a workforce representative of the American people.
