The Coronado National Forest in southern Arizona is outreaching for interested candidates in a 120-day detail / temporary promotion Natural Resource Specialist position. Desired start date in March or April, 2020.


This is a temporary project manager position responsible for performing planning, coordination, and oversight for an ongoing large scale reclamation and revegetation project of degraded mine lands administered under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).



Duties Include:

Responsible for gathering all appropriate information to develop, budget, and effectively implement the immediate and long-range reclamation and restoration plans in the assigned area. Serve as contact for facilitating the project planning efforts between inter- and intra-agency and non-government organizations. If changes are required to project plan components, recommends changes based on founded results or new technical data.



Apply required expertise in botany, restoration ecology, soil fertility, physical and biological properties of soil, and floodplain and wetland delineation and restoration to develop project goals, objectives and implementation design methods consistent with national, regional, state, and forest standards, policies, and guidelines. Examples of project activities include, but are not limited to:

•         site preparation for native plant seeding and planting including substantial earth work, installation of erosion control measures, soil quality assessments, and prescribing soil amendments;

•         assessment of active revegetation priorities and development of native restoration seed species pallets, application rates and timing, and application techniques in unique sky island vegetation communities on large disturbance footprints;

•         obliteration of temporary roads in sensitive areas;

•         development of environmental documents for watershed restoration and range improvement projects under NEPA.



Collaborate with existing partners and develop new partners to leverage local resources for successful and efficient project outcomes.



Coordinate and consult with interdisciplinary teams of engineering, hydrology, wildlife, range, archeology, and fire management specialists to manage complex projects with multiple resource objectives.

Coordinate, direct, and oversee on-site implementation conducted by heavy equipment operators, technicians, partners, and volunteers to ensure activities follows specification of implementation design methods quality standards. Mentor trainees and partners on evaluating compliance with contract elements and critical quality control standards for a variety of implementation methods.
