Good morning everyone,
We are back on track for scheduling the ranch day for the college range students. Emma Weiss is our new point of contact for ASU. Also, they have a new Range professor that is on staff at ASU now. His name is Dr. Adam Stein. His email isAdam.c.stein at asu.edu . I’ve CC’d Dr. Stein (ASU), Dr. Alford (ASU) and Dr. Howery (UA) on this email.
The idea of a Ranch Day for the college students came from wanting to create an opportunity for the students to visit a working ranch in order to learn from the rancher about grazing management, herd genetics and overall ranch management. Also, I’m working towards gathering a group of range professionals from different land management agencies so students will have this informal venue to talk with each of us about our jobs, the agencies we work for and be able to “pick our brains”.
A big Thank You! to Chuck Backus who has graciously offered to host this event. Chuck and his wife Judy own the Quarter Circle U Ranch in the Superstition Mountains. Their Ranch Manager Jordan Selchow and his wife Tiffany, who works for the Arizona Beef Council, also bring a wealth of knowledge to the operation. Here is a great article about Chuck and the Quarter Circle U Ranch.https://www.azfb.org/Article/Meet-Arizona-Agricultures-Chuck-and-Judy-Backus
I’m very excited to see this event come to fruition. Now we need to schedule a date. My question to everyone, and especially the students, is which day of the week works best for your schedules? Will more students be able to come on a week day or a Saturday? Since we are already in February, and spring breaks are happening in March, how does everyone feel about holding this event inApril? Chuck, will that work for your ranch schedule?
I look forward to hearing back from everyone.
Thank you,
Alisha
