Vacancy Announcement Wetland Ecosystem Support Team Leader  Application Due Date:  September 13, 2019 
 
The Longleaf Alliance is seeking a Team Leader for the Gulf Coastal Plain Ecosystem Partnership (GCPEP) Wetland Ecosystem Support Team (WEST).  The WEST, consisting of four staff (3 Team Members, 1 Team Leader), was developed to support restoration of isolated wetlands in the GCPEP landscape.  

Priority work by the WEST will center on prescribed burning, invasive species control, mechanical treatments, for threatened and endangered species recovery, all tied to restoration of isolated wetlands.  Priority work areas include Eglin Air Force Base, Escribano Point Wildlife Management Area, Garcon Point Water Management Area, Yellow River Marsh Preserve State Park, and Blackwater River State Forest.  The position is full time with benefits and is currently funded for 1 year with the potential of an additional two years of funding. 
 
Duties: The Wetland Ecosystem Support Team Leader is responsible for leading the restoration of priority isolated wetlands that the team is assigned per the direction of the land manager and Longleaf Alliance, tracking herbicide usage, communicating with supervisor, partners, and crew, maintaining a safe and efficient work environment  while using mechanical treatments, prescribed fire, invasive species control, and habitat restoration for rare, threatened, and endangered species and any other duties assigned. 
 
Qualifications: Applicants must have at a minimum, an AA or BS in biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field and two years of related work experience. In addition, the applicant must have basic fire qualifications to include NWCG certificates for S-130, S-190, and S-212, and must have or pass the Arduous Pack Test (3miles, 45 lbs., in less than 45 minutes) within the first month.  Preferred qualifications include S-131 with a completed or open Task Book for FFT1 Advanced Wildland Fire Fighter, a current red card, a commercial herbicide applicator license, field experience with prescribed fire and control of invasive species, ability to use a chainsaw and/or brush cutter, the ability to use computer and field equipment, and the ability to work in wet and harsh conditions.

Job Description:  The primary responsibility of this position is to direct, oversee and monitor vegetation management measures in the Everglades Stormwater Treatment Areas (STAs) and other constructed wetlands managed by the District.  Management measures are employed to ensure establishment and maintenance of desired vegetation communities and control plant species that impact water quality treatment capabilities.
 
The incumbent will instruct and direct District contractors in aerial and ground application of herbicides, mechanical removal of undesirable vegetation, and measures to promote establishment of desired plant species, including supplemental plantings.  The incumbent will also be responsible for monitoring and evaluating the progress of these vegetation management efforts.
 
The incumbent will report to the Vegetation Management Section’s Senior Scientist and will work closely with other Section staff in coordinating STA vegetation management activities in a timely and efficient manner.  The incumbent will conduct routine inspections of contractors engaged in vegetation management measures, complete inspection reports, and assist with preparation of vegetation management plans and statements of work. The incumbent will also provide logistical support to Section staff engaged in vegetation management field studies and occasionally perform herbicide applications for smaller projects.
 
Applicants must have an education background and practical work experience in vegetation management, good verbal and written communication skills, and ability to plan and manage heavy workloads, enthusiasm and temperament for dealing with harsh wetland field conditions, and willingness and commitment to actively contribute to a collaborative team work effort.  Florida wetland plant identification and airboat operation skills are preferred.
 
Employment Guidelines:Bachelor's Degree in Natural Sciences and 2+ years of experience in vegetation management work.  Or, an Associate's Degree in Natural or Physical Science or related field and 4+ years of experience in vegetation management work.
 
Licenses:  Valid State of Florida Driver’s License.  Possession or ability to acquire within 180 days State of Florida pesticide applicators license with Aquatic and Natural Areas certification.  District airboat certification will be required within 180 days of hire.
 
Physical Requirements/Working Environment:  The work environment is a combination of field work (80%) and office work (20%), with regular exposure to a hot and humid environment in remote and heavy vegetative areas, with exposure to stinging/biting insects, snakes, and alligators.  May be required to lift up to 60 lbs. 
 
Additional physical requirements include agility, balancing, basic water skills and ability to swim, driving vehicles, kneeling, and moving/transporting equipment, walking through rough terrain, working in, on, or near water.
 
Due to the District’s response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies.  This position is a member of the Emergency Debris Operations Team.

SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Florida Natural Areas Inventory (FNAI) at Florida State University is looking for an experienced botanist to work under the supervision of FNAI’s senior botanist on an array of applied research projects supporting land management and conservation in Florida.  Field work will be conducted on conservation lands from the Keys to the Panhandle.   Candidates with the applicable skills will help with GIS work, data analysis, species distribution modeling, and manuscript preparation.  Work will be split between field and office time, but will involve a considerable number of long field days in often challenging conditions – extreme temperatures, humidity, sun, biting insects, dense vegetation.  Candidates must be comfortable working in small groups, or sometimes alone, in areas with sporadic cell service, navigating to field sites through difficult terrain, and walking long distances.
 
Current FNAI projects that the candidate may assist with include:
 
                   Rare plant surveys
 
Vegetation monitoring plot data collection to inform land management
 
Natural community (ecosystem/vegetative community) mapping
 
Invasive plant surveys and evaluation of treatment efficacy
ABOUT FNAI:  The Florida Natural Areas Inventory (FNAI) is Florida's Natural Heritage Program and state member of the NatureServe network.  We are housed within the Florida Resources and Environmental Analysis Center at Florida State University.  As the Florida Heritage Program, one of our primary responsibilities is maintaining a spatial database of information on Florida's rarest species and conservation lands but we also work on an array of applied research projects to inform conservation and land management decisions making with funding provided by state and federal agency partners.  Our office is off-campus in Midtown which is centrally located near shops, restaurants, and historic neighborhoods.  The larger Tallahassee region offers many outdoor recreation opportunities in the nearby Apalachicola National Forest and a number of coastal parks and refuges within a short drive from town.
 
DUTIES: 
 
Identify plants, collect data on vegetative structure and composition, and distinguish vegetative communities using standard field protocols. 
 
Prepare maps using ArcGIS, process field data, analyze spatial and tabular data.
 
Participate in meetings with co-workers, and agency partners as necessary to coordinate project activities and present results as required by project. 
 
Assist in the completion of technical reports and/or manuscripts upon project completion.
 
REQUIREMENTS:
 
Bachelor’s degree in the botany or biological sciences (master’s degree or PhD preferred)
 
Minimum of one year (two years or more preferred) full-time experience collecting botanical field data. 
 
Experience identifying plants using taxonomic keys and extensive knowledge of the flora of the southeastern US, preferably Florida.
 
Good organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail. 
 
Ability to work independently and under pressure of deadlines and to provide written responses in a timely manner. 
 
Ability to communicate well in person and in writing.
 
Ability to work well with FNAI staff scientists and other university or agency partners.
 
A commitment to conducting professional conservation work and delivering high quality products.
 
Willingness to travel frequently during the week for multi-day work trips in remote areas.
 
Excellent physical condition and the ability to conduct rigorous field work in adverse conditions.
 
Other Preferred Skills:
 
Experience with remote sensing, natural community and habitat interpretation from aerial photographs and satellite imagery.
 
Experience or familiarity with ArcGIS and database management software.
