Salary: $20.29 - $23.75 per hour; depending on experience

The Agriculture Program Specialists oversee a statewide agricultural program by providing technical assistance to interested parties and department administrative staff and recommending general program direction to ensure compliance with applicable regulations. This position is the lead specialist for the weed and pest program. The position may assist with initiating and interpreting enforcement action, provide program direction by interpreting federal and state regulations and overseeing program activities. Activities include but are not limited to: answering weed related questions and complaints, conducting inspections as needed - ex. weed free forage, assisting counties with annual, fiscal and inspection reports and compiling those reports, prairie dog complaints, giving noxious weed presentations at meetings, assisting counties and weed boards as the need arises, organizing weed board minutes, annual, fiscal and inspections reports as they come in, periodically required to train staff. This position will have daily contact with weed and pest supervisors from all across the state and will work with them and weed boards to provide interpretation of laws and regulations. Frequent contact with federal, state and local agencies to coordinate activities and exchange information, as well as coordination with co-workers.

In- and out-of-state travel will be required in this position to do inspections and attend meetings, otherwise the work will be within a typical office environment.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Knowledge of:
- plant diseases and pests and associated plant injuries;
- prevention and treatment of plant diseases and pests including use of pesticides, insecticides and fungicides;
- technical terms and jargon applicable to a specialty;
- principles of environmental management;
- current issues related to genetic engineering;
- principles of effective human relations and dealing with the public;
- applicable federal and state laws, rules and regulations;
- departmental policies and procedures;
- basic principles and terminology of data processing;
- techniques of administrative investigation.

Ability to:
- make appropriate decisions by applying standards and available information to specific situations;
- identify and define problems or potential problems and place them in proper order;
- analyze cause and effect relationships in problems and develop resolutions;
- clearly and concisely communicate information and develop ideas in a logical sequence;
- favorably present and promote departmental priorities, services, and actions internally and externally;
- manage natural resource data using geographic information systems;
- develop policies and define standards;
- develop procedures and determine the logical flow of work;
- monitor and evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of programs;
- change existing programs to meet changing trends, needs and values.
