TUCSON CHAPTER EBLAST FOR APRIL 2019

Waterman Wildflowers Galore THIS SUNDAY

[PoppiesPhacelia-Arizona Plants-095.jpg]<about:invalid#zClosurez>[Blue Dicks-Arizona Plants-089.jpg]<about:invalid#zClosurez>On a remote slope west of the Waterman Restoration site there is a knockout gorgeous bloom of wildflowers: Swathes of jewelflowers, blue dicks and desert anenomes galore, and carpets of Mojave Daisies, and dark powder blue larkspurs, oh my.

This hillside deserves being enjoyed by AZNPS members while it lasts! Join John Scheuring this Sunday morning March 31 for an amazing wildflower walk. The hike is about a mile round trip over gradual sloping and sometimes a bit rough terrain.

Following the walk those who have time can stay and have brunch together at the Sky Rider Café.

Meet : 8am at the east end of the Marana airport parking lot on Avra Valley Road.

Return to airport : by 11am. Trip limited to 15 people. Vehicles do not need to be high clearance.

Wear : long pants, hiking boots and a hat

Bring : water

Curvin Metzler

Fossil Plants and What They Tell Us

Fossils are time capsules with stories to tell. Newly discovered plant fossils continue to expand our understanding of the origin of plant traits that have led to the modern flora, the plants we see around us today. Curvin will give us a brief summary of the fascinating story of how plants have evolved over time. He will provide us with descriptions of past environments, as these have been determined from the fossil record. Then he will take us through a set of images that will trace this sequence in the history of plants on earth.

Curvin Metzler is an amateur paleontologist who has been collecting fossils for over 25 years. He has discovered various new species of fossil plants and animals, mostly in Alaska. He has a degree in the Natural Sciences, as well as degrees in Math and CS.

Meetings are at 7:00 PM, at the Ward 6 office, 3202 E. 1st St. located near the intersection of Speedway and Country Club. Bring your money to buy raffle tickets, which can earn you a great prize and will support our society.
