Message from the SRM President
By: Clayton Marlow, 2019 SRM President

WE ARE RANGELANDS – Year of the Sections

[https://gallery.mailchimp.com/aabb3bc932b99943fd4ad042f/images/eb234eea-40a1-4285-ab92-c668c4a65f6f.jpg]The growth and relevancy of the Society for Range Management (SRM) is driven by the collective vision, activity and leadership of the Sections. Importantly, all three pathways converge to produce the framework for the Section’s growth and long term contribution to local producers, conservationists, young and seasoned professionals. Much like well-engineered scaffolding enables effective building construction, individual Section expertise can be combined into a coherent agenda that directs the activities and recommendations of the SRM Advisory Council and the Board of Directors. The flow of information from Sections to the Advisory Council, SRM staff and Board is critically important to the timeliness and depth of the Society’s responses to agency and public requests for information about professional standards and the conservation of rangeland resources. Input from Sections also directs the Parent Society’s efforts to generate tangible benefits for SRM members. In short, the opportunities and benefits from SRM membership are rooted in strong, active Sections.

Helping maintain and preserve rangelands and inform the ranchers and professionals who manage them, Tip Hudson, WSU associate professor of rangeland and livestock management and director of Kittitas County Extension, recently launched a new podcast, “Art of Range.” The podcast is produced by Washington State University Extension in cooperation with the Society for Range Management.

Seeking to provide education through conversation with national experts on managing and conserving rangelands—the grasslands, forest lands and prairies that support grazing—Hudson began the podcast last fall, posting new episodes every two weeks.

“Healthy land, healthy animals, and healthy communities are inextricably linked,” says Hudson. “My goal with this podcast is to help people produce food and fiber on naturally-occurring plant communities in ways that promote sound ecology and economy.”

2019 SRM Annual Meeting Intern Review
By: Julia Hanson, IM Section

[https://gallery.mailchimp.com/aabb3bc932b99943fd4ad042f/images/52db15a3-2389-4816-8f16-28745db2ebd3.jpg]I had the privilege of being SRM’s 2019 Annual Meeting Intern in Minneapolis, MN this last February. I was responsible for SRM’s social media during the meeting, assisting with SRM’s apparel booth and sales, as well as assisting Office Services Manager Vicky Trujillo with a variety of tasks.

I attended my first SRM Annual Meeting in 2018, and became a member of the Society. I was excited to learn about the internship opportunity which would help me to become more involved in the Society, get an inside look at how the Annual Meeting functions, make more professional connections within the SRM, as well as give me the opportunity to attend another SRM Annual Meeting.

Many of my responsibilities during the meeting required me to work closely alongside the Young Professionals Conclave (YPC). I had previously been interested in getting connected with YPC, and the internship position initiated involvement and helped make those connections. I am now a part of the YPC Advisory Council as well as the Wild Rags Task Force Chair. I look forward to working with the Conclave even more in the future.

This internship opens the door to many opportunities, jobs, and friendships across the country. I would encourage any young professional who wants to get more involved in the Society, and in the Annual Meetings to apply for this internship.

Young Producer's Thank You

I just wanted to write you a quick note to extend my sincerest thanks for the financial support that Josie and I received at this year’s SRM Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, MN. I was blown away by the level of organizing and coordination that SRM accomplishes. Getting a thousand plus folks all together in a room, united together behind a common goal, is a really big deal. I am not only impressed, but also inspired to continue to be a part of the organization; and I truly look forward to my future involvement.

In addition to the overall organization, the workshops and networking opportunities have proved to be invaluable. I was able build contacts with professionals in my field (both locally and nationally), and I know the presentations that many of them gave will have tremendous influence in the coming years as Josie and I continue to shape our business.

I'm also very excited to work with you to publish a story about us and our projects.

Again, thank you so much for this opportunity. I do not exaggerate when I say that it has been one of the most defining and valuable weeks of my career to date.

Warmly,

Arlo C. Hark

Rangeland Ecology & Management (REM) Highlight

By: Roger Sheley, Editor in Chief – Rangeland Ecology & Management

I thought many SRM members might be interested in some thoughts about the long-term direction for REM. I know I would appreciate any ideas you have for improve our journal. If you do have some thoughts to share, please email me at roger.sheley at oregonstate.edu<mailto:roger.sheley at oregonstate.edu?subject=REM%20Journal%20Improvements%20or%20Ideas>. Once I crawl out from under this stack of draft journal manuscripts, I will consider your constructive comments! Here is a beginning of ideas.

1) Enhancing our international appeal and improving our service to international authors and audiences in order to have a positive impact on Rangelands Worldwide. To support this effort, I am working to build the critical mass of international leaders in Rangeland Science and Management combined with some key people in the USA and SRM to provide advisory to the Board and the Editor-in-Chief to continue to improve the scientific and managerial value of REM worldwide.
