Course Description:
Asteraceae is the largest family of vascular plants in Arizona. With over 600 species in Arizona and flowers ranging from the almost invisible to saucer-sized sunflowers, from the obvious composite (Bailyeya multiradiata<https://aznps.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ff07b0d0c3b03450617754e51&id=ddcb0bd7ae&e=9334254f8f>) to the strange (Ambrosia monogyra<https://aznps.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ff07b0d0c3b03450617754e51&id=1b3dc53f50&e=9334254f8f>), the family offers some challenges, even to experienced field botanists.
In this 6-hour class, Doug Ripley, Cochise Chapter, and Ries Lindley, Tucson Chapter, will step you through some methods for identifying plants in this wonderful family. You will learn a bit about the tribes, how to use keys, and you will learn ways to combine methods for discovering a plant’s true name.
Most importantly, you will be able to impress your botanizing friends by knowing what cypselae are.
