Graduate Students/Advanced undergrads: Apply now for paid field instructor position with environmental education project
The Nature and Environment Day Camp is a science-based summer field experience for teens and preteens held in the East Bay Hills.  It is designed to provide hands-on, field science instruction that introduces concepts and practical experience in ecology, biodiversity, watershed study and conservation. The program is being developed as a collaboration of the U.C. Berkeley Natural History Museums, the East Bay Regional Parks, and the Mount Diablo-Silverado Boy Scout Council.
When:  July 30-August 3, 8:30-3:00; some additional time will be required prior to the session for training and to visit field sites
Pay:  $800 for the week
Where:  Facilities are at Camp Herms in El Cerrito; field explorations are on-site at Camp Herms and in the Wildcat Creek watershed in Berkeley, El Cerrito and Richmond.
About the camp:  The Nature and Environment Day Camp (NEDC) is a five-day field course.  While exploring and hiking in terrestrial and stream habitats of the East Bay Hills, youth participants will use a variety of field techniques to investigate biodiversity and watershed processes under the guidance of a science instructor from UC Berkeley.  They will also engage in and environmental service projects and gain a sense of themselves as both environmental scientists and informed stewards for the environment.
Field Instructor Responsibilities:  The field instructor, assisted by the camp Director, will lead outdoor science activities for a small group of students (ca. 10-15).  The curriculum includes investigations of erosion, exploration of watershed models and maps, a watershed hike, biodiversity studies using a variety of collecting and observation techniques, and service projects. The role of the field instructor is to lead and provide instructions and context for the field investigations, help participants interpret their observations, lead discussions, encourage questions, insure safety, and share his/her knowledge of local biodiversity, natural history and ecology.  Although we have an established program of activities and content, there is room for additions and/or modifications by the field instructor based on his/her expertise. The field instructor will be present each day of the camp to lead the science activities.  Some time prior to the session will also be needed for training and to visit field sites.
Qualifications:  We are looking for graduate students, advanced undergraduates or recently graduated undergraduates who are enthusiastic about sharing their expertise and experience, engaging young people in the process of science, and supporting the development of a locally based nature and the environment program.  Background in some area of environmental science/natural history study is necessary (e.g. ecology, botany, entomology, biodiversity, natural history, wildlife biology and/or watersheds or stream ecology, etc.); although not required, experience as a GSI, an environmental educator or other teaching is preferred.
